Bringing up map when traveling the world map

How can I do this via code?

For example, when the character gets a status message about drug addictions, it automatically loads a desert map and displays the message.

I have my "The poison has left your system" message working flawlessly, except I can't get an override on the world map to work. TOWN_MAP and WORLD_MAP commands are not what i'm looking for. LOAD_MAP(#, elev) also does not work.

From what I can gather, I think this can be done in Fallout 2 but not in Fallout 1, not without code edits anyway. Nuts.

Really? In Fallout 1, unmodded, I got stopped automatically every so often after I left the Glow, since I was glowing radioactive (not enough RadX).

I know, that's what's bugging me. I know it's possible, but I'm having trouble finding script command that can make it happen :( I think maybe it's hard-coded. There's some commands like load_map and world_map that sort of thing but they don't work properly when I've tested them.
 
I'm no coder, but couldn't you just script a huge radiation dose, then remove it when the encounter has been prompted.

Yeah that's been my impression through gameplay and messing around with scripting.

Oh! That's a really good idea.

Not sure If I can get rid of the "large dose of radiation" message but it's worth a shot. Thanks!
