I was listening to an album when, all of a sudden, I hear a loud cracking sound. As far as I can tell, Californication will never play again. My problem is that I can't get the disc drive to open. I've pressed the open button a number of times, gone to the control panel of my computer and attempted to open it manually, with no luck. What the hell can I do?

Buy a new drive, and ask someone to clean your pc, because you will find pieces of cd everywhere...
Happened to me too, i was playing diablo and all of a sudden, bye bye my cd and my drive.

Remove the drive from the PC, force it open with a knife or somesuch.

Also, be happy that you'll never be able to hear that song again. It's really, really boring. Especially to perform.

I love the album. That song is good, I don't think it's a highlight though. Are you saying it's boring to perform from personal experience?

Do I have to buy a new drive?

If the disc pretty much exploded inside of it, yes. The reading mechanism and the motor are likely all screwed up, and a single piece of the cd could screw up every other cd you ever put into it.

CD drives are cheap as hell though, you should have no problems finding a decent one.

I've never had that happen. Wow. I've had tons of drives wear out and fuck up discs, but EXPLODE?

I'm impressed.

You can totally buy a CD/DVD burner that's decent for around $50 these days. I got a good one for around $45 online.

Well, he didn't say explode, but I assume that when a disc cracks apart at 52x or whatever he was running it at, shit gets thrown all over the place.

Heh, at work we had a computer fall onto the floor (read my post in Teh Order or whatever it's called now) and it still reads cds and dvds, and even burns dvds surprisingly enough.

CD/DVD is a pretty crappy medium when you think about it. It's too delicate, too large and too slow.

Can't beat the price tho'.

yup & it's pretty common

so common even that cd & drive manufacturers usually put a disclaimer on their products. if you read the find print on cd packs you'll see you are to check all cd's & dvd's for miniscule cracks before using them.

By any chance, stag, was the cd that exploded a copy of the Californication cd, or the actual album?

Coz cheap cds and dvs tend to explode like that.

Did anyone see that Mythbusters episode where they tested the myth of exploding cds? They did say it was uncommon, and even had a brief interview with I think, a leading cd manufacturing guy. They bought the latest cd drives and the cds that were placed in the cd drive were put under different variables, like scratched, microwaved, left in the sun and a control cd. None of the cds exploded in a conventional 72x speed cd drive (or maybe 56x I'm not sure). So the Mysthbusters amped a drill that could fit cds at an incredibly high RPM level, and they exploded.

i saw that too, but as i'm pretty much right smack in the IT industry, i see people having that problem more often than one would think.

and yes, an intact disk will survive a ride on a modded & amped 'dremel', but the thing is, the smallest flaw or damage to the disk will after prolonged use turn it into shards of CD/DVD-drive destruction.

the most teltale sign of impending doom is a miniscule crack on the inside of the disk (not the written data area, but the plastic in the middle).

Yes. Yes I am.

That depends on what exactly happened. Go pry it open.

If you're going to buy a new drive, just by a NEC. Cheap and good quality.

The actual album.

Meh, Californiacation was the start of RHCP going a little crappy, your computer was probably a loyal RHCP fan, and couldn't stand listening to Road Trippin' or Cali. Don't blame it, just keep it the hell away from By The Way and Satdium Arcadium.
Personal Experience, of same situation, You need a new drive.

I don't know about where you live, but a new 52x CD-ROM is $20 where I live, which is probably cheaper than most music CD's. Also, a DVD burner is $40

successfully cleaning out a drive after having a dvd/cd shatter into smithereens is kinda unlikely. gl though :)
