Call of Duty II

Gunslinger

Mildly Dipped
I just read the exclusive preview of Call of Duty II from PC Gamer and I'm pretty stoked about it. Both the original Call of Duty and its expansion United Offensive were definitely worth their money's worth; I'd have to say that they are my favorite games of both action and WW2 genre.

But Call of Duty II looks like it'll trump all of Infinity's previous efforts. The graphics look gorgeous. It looks like they're using a new engine, possibly Source. Either that, or they really revamped their modified Quake engine.

The campaign includes the deserts of North Africa for the British, a return to Stalingrad for the Russians, and a return to the infamous beaches of Omaha Beach for the Americans (which pretty much blew my mind in Allied Assault).

I'm hoping the second one leans more towards realism then the past games. The First game and the expansion were nice propaganda movie types with fun set pieces, but I wouldn't put them up as the greatest game simulations of the second Great War since they were pretty much just glorified railshooters.

That said, from what I've read (So much for the PCG "Exclusive" preview) it does indeed look like Call of Duty II will be taking a much wider, realistic and tactical road then the one seen in the originals. I'm especially looking forward to begining the Soviet campaign with the Fascist Hitlerite Sheep Defilers (Germans) at the gates of Moscow, one of the turning points of the war and the time when some of my family made quite a name for themselves.

Ahhh....excellent. While Call of Duty wasn't all that big on the realism thing (the first part of the Russian campaign came almost exactly from 'Enemy at the Gates', for instance), it had a great atmosphere, and was fun to play. It was too short, though, so they should hopefully fix that.
The shortness also makes for the one reason why I think the first one wasn't worth the full price. About 8 hours of gameplay can't possibly justify 50 euros.

I noticed that Infinity relies heavily on previous WW2 material and movies. Off the top of my head, I remember that parts of Allied Assault's sniper duel level came from Saving Private Ryan. The Omaha Beach level was almost the same exact scene from the film, complete with the dash to the shingle and the bangalore charge. You'll also find alot of similar scenes from Band of Brothers in Call of Duty.

Sounds cool. I really doubt the Quake 3 engine will be licensed again though; it's obvious the engine has reached its limitations and it would be easier to just licence something a little more capable to satisfy modern expectations.

Also, wasn't the original CoD realistic enough for ya? Wasn't walking over a health pack and getting an instant increase in your health highly realistic behavior? I though it was. :)

Well, CoD2 is out...

I think it's not as good as it's made out to be. When I saw the screenshots I had the most awfull Pacific Assault flashback, and Pacific Assault was one of the worst pieces of shit I ever had the misfortune of playing.

Comments...

On my first play through of the Demo I beat it on the hardest setting without dying in about 12 minutes. The new "recharging" health is a horrible idea and has basicly ruined the game. I wanted a Great Patriotic War game not Halo with Nazis.

I've also seen from comrades that the much talked about tactical level they tried to push early in the development is almost entirely non existant. Still just a glorified rail shooter.

I probably won't be picking this one up till the price goes down.
