I think this is the right forum.

Anyway, I've been wanting to buy a decent camera for a while. I'm looking for something that can take pretty high res pics and isn't all shitty and shit.
I don't want something too bulky, I'm not really into photography but just something to use for taking shitty pictures of cool stuff or something. Around town, photos of my friends, maybe some photos for reference for art or something too. I mean, I'm into photography, but I'm not like, into photography. Something preferably I could pop into my pocket or a messenger bag or something and not have to worry about too much. I dunno. Whatever. Thanks.

Oh, also, I've been using my mom's digital camera a bit, and it's slow as shit to take a picture. I'd appreciate if anyone knows about cameras that are not slow as shit.

I'm looking at this deal right here:

Hah, I should have started this thread a week ago before I purchased mine. I was pretty much looking for the same thing as you. Compact size is definitely my priority, I hate those Hubble telescope lenses. But then again, you really need at least some decent quality right? Based on personal experience I can tell you right now to stay away from Sony. I had one for a while and man were the photos soft and blurry, and I'm not the only one to claim this. Before that I had a Fuji and was pretty satisfied. I'm gonna give Canon a shot now (but of course, I'd also like to hear some more opinions).

Here's some links that will hopefully help:

Review of compact cameras at cameras.co.uk. You mentioned speed as an important factor so maybe you'd want to check out their shutter lag comparison table.

A useful deal searching site - PriceGrabber. You might not find the best deal but I like the specifications you can set on the left so you can at least browse easily.

Thanks. I guess everyone else has abandoned us to our little corner, but that comparison thing helped a good bit.

I bought my gf an Olympus and it rocks.

They are probably (imo) one of the finer Point and Shoots that you can get. Look into them if you can.

I know I was thinking that too. Wtf, this place used to be happening. I guess everyone's just jerking it in the order nowadays.

not a lot of people have the required expertise to give decent tips on digital cameras tbfh... it's a complex issue.

i'm looking for a decent one as well, but fuck, it's complicated to make the right choice without spending 750 euros...

Really? I actually thought that a lot of people here would have the knowledge. Besides, neither Stag nor I are experts; we're just looking for some average NMA-Joe opinions for everyday use cameras.

Either way, it's really Wooz that dropped the ball on this one. I assumed he would be talking away about cameras similarly to your frequent and unsolicited jabber about firearms

he might abstain because the market for digicams is currently getting fucked due to the financial crisis.
every high priced cam from Japan is getting an estimated 10% price increase (soon, if it hasn't happened yet where you are). might not seem that much, but considering that a good cam with a good lense costs about 600 euros, well, going to 660 euros does make a big difference.

and tbfh, i also used to post a lot about pc hardware, but i've toned down since usually i don't have the will to invest that much time into those comments lately (guns are a lot more enjoyable to post about :P ). most replies are basic and ok enough advice for me not to intervene lately anyway. Woozy might be in a similar state of mind, or just fucking stressed about deadlines he has to meet.
