Can anybody recommend a 'Fallout style' book?

First time out of the vault
You know, a post-apocalyptic book set in a similar kind of universe?

Need to fire up this new Kindle. . .

Swan Song isn't too bad. A Canticle for Leibowitz is also good. Both have ups and downs that can easily make or break the story for you.

Swan Song is like an easier to get into version of The Stand but with more post nuclear war stuff. It also has some really dopey peace on earth magic bullshit and a cheesy ass ending. At least it's never boring.

Canticle has cool settings skipping through time and great ideas, but 90% of it is a real chore to read. Nothing happens and you just want to power through long sections until you reach a few pages of something interesting.

I know it's pretty typical but...The Road by Cormac McCarthy. It simply is an amazing book. The writing style is a bit odd though but it wasn't really a challenge to overlook.

While I haven't read many of them yet, Deathlands is a good pulp alternative to more serious novels. Kinda like Star Wars novels. Fun and entertaining, but not exactly quality writing.

The Freeway Warrior is not an ordinary book, but a gamebook, so it does include things like random encounters etc and the reader actually "plays" it - however, it is practically the same as the Fallout world.

In that scenario (written in 1988 and 1989), it's not about the Cold War, but the War on Terrorism - world gets destroyed in 2019/2020 in the fight between the UN and HAVOC.

The reader/character is one of the few survivors in the wastes...[/i][/b]

The Postman by David Brin is pretty good but it's more of the "lone non-hero traveling around and doing shit" side of fallout instead of the post-nuke wasteland side. It's still post-apocalyptic but it's never established what happened. The environment itself is pretty much unchanged from what I remember, just most people are dead and the survivors are plagued by gangs of raider-type people. I'd give it a general 7/10, but to a fallout fan I'd say 8 or 9/10
