First time out of the vault
BIS FO Editor "Couldn't locate/load text fonts" error
------------------
To fix this problem change the mapper2.cfg file's [system] section to the following:

[system]
critter_dat=H:\Games\BlackIsle\Fallout2\critter.dat
critter_patches=H:\Games\BlackIsle\Fallout2\data
master_dat=H:\Games\BlackIsle\Fallout2\master.dat
master_patches=H:\Games\BlackIsle\Fallout2\data

Where H:\ is the letter of your HD, and Games\BlackIsle\Fallout2\ is the path to the editor. You should manually locate your executable/data files and change the path accordingly.

Fallout 2 "Couldn't locate/load text fonts" error
------------------
Same thing as above except fallout2.cfg is the file you want.

I get the above error (the Fallout2 version) and occaisionally (as I've messed around with studd trying to follow the solutions at the FAQ) this one:

Insufficient Disk Space Error
------------------
When you get that message it's either:
A. You are really running low on diskspace and should free up some, or
B. Your config files misguide you.

The following solution is for the latter and was proven to work for both FO1 and FO2.

...both of which require me to open fallout2.cfg, which doesn't appear to exist, in my computer or in the CD. I even used the search function, couldn't find anything. Could it be called soemthing else?

My version is The Fallout Collection from White Label, where you get Fallout 1, 2 & Tactics on the same CD. Also I'm in the UK, don't know if that means anything.

Error opening C:\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout2\master.dat for writing
------------------------------
Right-click the file it complains about and see if it's set to "read only". If so, uncheck that option.

I get this error, too, only when I try to change it, it says 'Access denied'; I can't change that file's attributes apparently. Any idea how to get around this?

Or it's Vista rounding up all config files and putting them in one place in order to appease the Aztec gods of config.

Hey guys, thanks for the help but I have another problem now; there is now a fallout2.cfg but I'm still getting the 'Couldn't find/load text fonts' error. I tried copying what it said in the FAQ but that didn't work, then I tried changing the filenames to the actual file names of my fallout folder, and that didn't work.

This is what my Fallout2.cfg file looks like now:

[sound]
music_path1=C:\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout2\data\sound\music\
music_path2=(CDROM):\data\sound\music\

[system]
critter_dat=C:\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout2\critter.dat
critter_patches=C:\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout2\data
master_dat=C:\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout2\master.dat\master.dat
master_patches=C:\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout2\data

the fallout folder is C:\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout2.

Master.dat is in a folder that is also called Master.dat in the Fallout2 file; it did that automatically but could that be why it can't find it? I tried adjusting the pathway in the .cfg file as you can see.

Hmm, that's odd. It looks OK, apart from that master.dat folder thing.
I did set up my game the same way just to test and it still works.
I don't have that white label collection, so I don't know how the install works there, but it makes no sense that it makes a master.dat folder.

I would rename the master.dat folder, then move out the master.dat file from there, change the the .cfg file accordingly and see what happens.

If you are using Vista, you could try to install the game somewhere else than in the program folder.

Move the game outside "Program Files" or even drive C:, because Vista obviously knows better which files shouldn't be written than the applications that use said files.
