Can't finish the "splinter" quest

First time out of the vault
Hey,

after talking to the shi scientist who had chip's (the guy who's supposed to be standing around south-east of the general store on the tanker in san francisco) splinter, chip has just disappeared.

Therefore i can't ask him to get the damn thing back into his body by visiting the doctor in sf. The quest can't be completed as it seems, yet it still shows up in the status. I've been searching that tanker for at least 20 minutes. No chip. Google and the forum search also gave no results regarding this issue.

Is this a bug or a feature - did i do something wrong?

I'm mainly asking because i'm unsure wether this could be a gamestoping bug - since it's my first fo2 game ever I don't know the storyline / importance of quests, yet.

Off the top of my head, I can only think that you took too long to save Chip. I think he'll die five days to a week from the time you accept the quest; Per's guide says five. Search that page for "Chip's" and you might find a possible answer.
 
Damn it,
I KNEW i should have saved him before having that power armor upgraded etc etc.

I guess that mean's while I'll miss out on some follow-up quests on the tanker chip's death won't be a showstoper then.
Hard but bearable.

They come and go..

Just ignore him, eventually they return to the habitat of which they originated (www.asshelmets.com)..
