Can't run Fallout 2 anymore.

I just recently did an clean install of Win98se on my Dell PIII 700. I made sure to install the latest drivers from NVidia for my GeForce 256 video card and Directx8. I've tried a large and humungous install and when I try to load the game it says "please wait" and then drops me back to the windows desktop! I've gone through interplay's troubleshooting document and it didn't help. I downloaded the directx "certified" vidio drivers from Microsoft, but it doesn't help. Anyone got any ideas? All I can say is it worked in the past, but not now so the problem must be with drivers or software. (I've also tried the patch.)

it appears that lots of people are having trouble playing fallout with directx 7/8. I my self never had these problems. I have Asus 7100 card.

maybe it's sound card? which sound card do you have?

I figured it out. It had nothing to do with dx8 or video either. My cd had some flaw in it and it wasn't copying critter.dat entirely during the install. I discovered that when I tried to manually copy it to the HD and got an error. A new CD fixed the problem.
