Can't see/find the .map files? [Solved]

HostileMutantCacti

First time out of the vault
I downloaded the Interplay/Black Isle editor and messed around for a while, but now when I try to find them (the .map files) in Explorer I can't.

Although when I use the editor and Mapper I can find them in the same path.

Please help O_o

The mapper is probably reading the files from master.dat which can't just be explored without additional programs.

If you save a map, it should create a file located at 'C:\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout2\data\maps' if you didn't mess with the configuration file.

I made a map from scratch and saved it as test.map and I didn't modify any configs and they didn't appear so...

...how do I make them appear? Thanks <3

Sorry, I don't know then. I just did the same thing, made a blank map and "saved as" and it was there in C:\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout2\data\maps along with the .cfg file it creates.

Did you look in the folder manually? Maybe Explorer hides file types it cannot recognise?

You were right about the master.dat thing, they are there. But I still think Windows is hiding the files from me since I can see the maps in the folder (C:\program files\etc) when I use for example mapper2.

I'll try to extract them, datman is giving me and error that says "can't extract to the selected directory" (ive tried a bunch of different dirs). But I'll download another tool and see if I can extract :D

Thanks :P

Did you find a 'maps' folder but it looks empty? Try going to Windows tools > folder options from the pull down menu and see if it is set to show hidden and system files. That might make them visible.

If they aren't, then I doubt unpacking the entire .dat file is going to help, but maybe it would. :?

You shouldn't need to do that, but if 'datman' gives you problems, try 'dat_explorer' as that was the only one I could get working.

I unpacked the master.dat with datexplorer (which is giving me "cannot open" error now btw), everything was there except the map I made.

I set it to show hidden and system files but no luck :/

I can see most of the files and savegames when I use the mapper (not the official one) but I can't copy them or anything it just says that "cannot copy the file doesn't seem to be there" or similiar.
When I rightclick the data folder in FO2 folder it says that size 0 bytes although in reality it's full of FO files.

I really would want to learn modding but this makes me wanna quit :/

(Yes I have installed humongous installation :P)

Are you using vista? I'm tempted to blame UAC...

If not, xp x64 or a xp x86 limited user account will have similar limitations.

Yes I'm on Vista (home basic), I probably should've mentioned that :P. So what about the Vista?

UAC blocks anything from writing to the program files folder. You'll find your map files in a hidden folder in your documents folder. Fallout can see them there, but obviously when you look at the folder in explorer you cant see them. :P

Turn off UAC, and everything will start behaving like you expect it to. Just google it to find out how. Once UAC is off, copy all the files from the hidden virtualstore folder back to the fallout folder, and cary on like normal.

Edit: Alternitivly, you could uninstall fallout, the mapper and whatever else you installed, and install them all somewhere outside of the programs folder. C:\Games\Fallout would work. That way the folder wouldn't be subject to UAC.

I got it working but lost all the progress so far, don't know if it was the UAC or the new path I installed to that did the trick.
But thank god it works now phew, I really hate computers (and especially Vista) sometimes...

Thanks aaaaaaaa lot. I'll post again when I encounter more problems :D
