Car Out Of Fuel Disappearing Bug?

First time out of the vault
When the car ran out of fuel for the 1st time it stalls and then I come out of the car into the empty wasteland to refuel it. This is the expected behaviour.

But the 2nd time doesn't seem to behave as expected. The car runs out of fuel and I continue on foot only to lose my car in the wastelands. No marker or whatsoever of my car's whereabouts.

I know this is a known bug but wasn't it fixed in the unofficial patches?
 
In my experience with this bug, the car usually appears in the place I was headed towards. Or whatever town is closest. Last time it happened I had clicked on a town, then changed direction, and when it ran out of fuel it just disappeared. So I checked the town and it was there.

This does not always happen. Occassionally, the car will appear on the other side of the map very far from where you actually ran out of gas. Also, one time I ran out of gas right when I arrived at SF and instead of the car appearing in SF, the out of gas icon was trapped under the SF town icon and I could never get my car back.
Save frequently.
