Case mods for my new fallout machine

Look, Ma! Two Heads!
My buddy just replaced his laptop and was awsome enough to give me his old one. Aside from the cost of a replacement charger (18$), I got a Dell inspiron 1100 for free.

So I decided to make it into a fallout-specific machine, to use for nothing other than playing and modding my favorite game.

I figure a neat case mod is in order. I was thinking finding an old briefcase, covering it in sheet metal, and stamping GECK in the top, and using it as a carry case. However I don't know what to do with the inside. However I happened to find a junk ocilloscope on the side of the road, so I have all kinds of neat retro '50s curcuit boards and control pannels. Lots of vacume tubes, switches, etc. Figured I can put all that either on the inside of the case, or on the top of the laptop.

Any ideas/sugestions?

would be awesome if you managed to pull the G.E.C.K. off

or

replace the 20th century circuits inside with the 50's retro ones and plug in the control panel! ... just sweet

and yeah, pics pics pics

I'll probably use the togle switch on one of the boards to activate a whole shitload of LEDS inside the suitcase, or on the laptop itself. And also, as you can see in one of the pictures, there's a round screen thingie. I'll probably also try to do something neat with that, like put a fallout logo in it that is only visible when the LEDS are on.

Also, I'll attach a bottle opener somewhere for Nuka Cola, obviously.

EDIT: Chances are I'll have to paint the G.E.C.K letters on the steel, since I doubt I'll be able to get it stamped and have it look any good. I'm thinking Dark gray on stainless steel? That's about how it would look, right? I've never actually seen a good sized picture of the geck so I don't know for sure.

you could also do a cut-out + added bottomplate to create the G.E.C.K. letters, rather than spraying them. thereby creating the indentation/stamp-style of the original. (watch for sharp edges though)

Yeah, I could do this easily, actually. I've got a great metal cutting bit on my dremil tool.

So far, I've only been able to paint a couple keys. As a test run, I painted some of the keys on the keyboard red to see how easily I could mask out the other keys. I'm still trying to decide where to go with it: I'm going to leave the Escape key red, and then use a old school lable maker to put a "Panic" lable on it. I'd like to figure out how to mark each key with it's corresponding command in the game without also masking the key's non-fallout function. Any recomendations for label makers or something like that?

Incidentally, I found this old case and am pondering putting a modern PC in it

And the bowels of the MB will be placed under the glass plate of my new desk :)

Of course, the case is an old AT, so I'd need to accomodate and ATX board in it... Probably a mini-ATX (any pointers on that are welcome)... And it'll probably be a sort of backup computer, since it's too small to accomodate all the disks and drives I'd like to put in my main workstation...

euhm, why are you posting that piece o' crap in this man's GECK modding thread? DERAILER!

and why would you want to put a modern pc inthere? it has suckass airflow, shit drivebays and cant accomodate an ATX mobo or psu without serious modding (yes, the psu wont fit either Silencer).

now, if it were a special classic pc case, ok, i'd understand. but this? this is just random generic filth?

Yeh, that's why I'm wondering if it's even possible...

Thats's the beauty of it. It's ugly enough to make it so special (not S.P.E.C.I.A.L., though) :)

EDIT: Also, I want my machine robust so I can boot it once in a while. Modern case are way too brittle.

to fit in an ATX PSU you'd probably need to dremel the case to pieces, thereby ruining your "robust" case.

why you so negative about modern cases? there are some pretty nice things out there. i myself dislike attentionwhore cases with wankerlights and such, but there is still plenty of other stuff around. Lian Li, Chieftec/Antec, Coolermaster,... many of those cases are more robust than your AT case for sure.

Awwww.... :(

Quite frankly, I don't care that much about cases at all, it'd rather be a sort of experiment. Plus, it'd be kind of ironic, because no-one would suspect a 3 GHz machine in THAT UGLY ;)

Also, I don't feel like spending money on a new case at all, cause I'm a <s>frugal</s> stingy bastard :D

Oh well. Let us get back to the G.E.C.K.

Post pix in the Fan Art, ITOLAS.

Well, I've got the Occilloscope control pannels modified enough to attach them to the laptop, just gotta figure out how I want to do it now.

As for your interesting case there, Silencer, you could make that pretty awsome looking with the right paintjob. Also, in responce to SuAside's remark about it having shitty airflow, a friend of mine once had the idea to build a cooling system for his PC that was also a slurpee machine. He wanted to steal or buy a slurpee machine from 711 and disasemble it, running the tubes for the faucets through his PC, install the cooling system for the slurpee machine in one side of his PC case and the faucets in the other. This way he'd have a super-cooled PC and slurpees on demand.

EDIT: as of right now, all I've done is paint a couple of keys on the keyboard and take appart the pannels from the Ocilloscope, so there's really nothing picture worthy yet. I'm still trying to decide whether to mount the Oscilloscope pannels directly to the laptop, or just mount them on the inside of the briefcase, which I still have to find.
