Changing the Starting Location

Andy-Spacetrain

First time out of the vault
I don't know if there already is a tool to do this, but I made one anyway. It changes the starting location from artemple.map to any map you want. It works by altering the fallout2.exe to choose a different map instead. Hope it works for everyone, I only spent about 15 minutes making it, and haven't tested it on any version other than American 1.02 yet.

*NOTE* THIS PROGRAM ALTERS FALLOUT2.EXE. PLEASE BACKUP THIS PROGRAM PRIOR TO RUNNING THIS PATCH.

Hmm it gives me error: this program must be run on win32 platform and nothing more(i have win98).

Good work! I dont suspose either of you guys know where the entry is for the version number and stuff? (hex offset)
This info can be found somewhere in patches for fallout 2 topic.

Andy. How hard it is to make a loader that pacthes the exe in memory and runs it from there? This would be just like the FO2 Loader, but I need a few other optiosn added.

Not too hard, but your best bet is still to use a patched EXE file. You can call it whatever you want "mymod.exe" for example, its easier then to release mods. I've also made a patch to change the main DAT file from patch000.dat to whatever you want, meaning with a seperate EXE file and a different DAT file, you can install a mod without altering any original files.

trouble is, the fallout 2 exe is copyrighted, and you are specifically banned from distributing it in any form ( that includes renaming it and editing it ) by the eula that comes with the editor ( a tool no doubt needed at some point in the making of a fallout 2 mod.. unles you use 3rd party map editor and scripter.. )

I still don't quite understand why people go through all this trouble when you can just name your first map artemple.map.

I can understand the various other patches but this one in perticular eludes me.

Well, 2 reasons really.

No.1 So you don't have to rename a map to artemple.map (not necessary, but still is more convenient)

No.2 Testing the mod, you can change the map to anything, so why not start somewhere late in the mod to test a later map? Saves having to manually go to that point, and also saves having to repeatedly change the filename.

So, it's not necessary, just handy

I read the EULA for the doesnt really say not to distribute the fallout2.exe, besides the fallout2.exe is included in the offical patch and the patch does not include a EULA with it.

Bonus. I was a bit worried about affecting it, but I think we could just as easily have a preloader that edits the offsets without changing Fallout2.exe itself.
