Character Questions.

First time out of the vault
I am not sure if this is the right forum or if the Fallout RPG Help is the right forum. However I am using the Restoration Patch with Fallout 2, so I'll assume this is the right forum.

I have been playing through the game so far with an Unarmed Character, If I remember correctly my starting stats were

S5
P6
E4
C6
I7
A9
L4

I got One Hander and Small Frame, and I tagged Unarmed, Lockpick and Speech... pretty standard non-gifted build I think. This characrer what one might call a "good guy" She is a female. ;)

However, I want to make what one might call a "bad guy", ie someone who joins the slaver guild, and has the childkiller and gravedigger stats. I think these are the major negative things you can do, among other stuff like getting super low karma and killing farmers and such. I don't plan to be lame and just wipe out every town, but actually pick all the "bad guy" options and such.

For this build I was thinking a solo sniper build, as per per's guide. But I want to focus on getting aimed shots and crippling or outright killing people in this manner. Infact, I may make every single shot I ever take as an aimed shot. So I guess I want good criticals. I have actually been thinking of getting gifted for this build, since I imagine i'll be getting into a LOT of fights in this game, so the 7 extra points would help a lot.

I am wondering what tips you can give, and what will I miss out on given the path I plan to take in this game, and how should I alter my build to make up for it.

Also, I will be semi-RPing this, in that I don't visit any town unless its in my map screen first. So no rushing to power armor. ;) Also, I play with both combat and the game on its hardest setting.

That unarmed character is pretty pissy - unarmed is a great way to play the game, easy at the start - hard in the middle of the game, and easier towards the end of the game with the slayer perk and power armor.

ST: 8 (3 melee damage.)
PE: 6 (Normal - random critters will start slightly closer to you.)
EN: 8 (More hit points - very important - get Lifegiver perk ASAP.)
CH: 2 (Your ugly as shit, just tag speech skill.)
IN: 6 (Average skill points.)
AG: 8 (9 action points = 3 hits per round.)
LK: 8 (Very important for critical hits - get it boosted at NCR to 10.)

Tag Gifted - and Jinxed (Jinxed will mean a lot of the critters you fight will lose their ammo in battle, with a high luck skill you will be at an advantage here.)

If you play an evil character just start killing the little kiddies, and whack every good caravan you meet, but know this - bounty hunters will track you down. At high levels they will be armed with gauss rifles and power armor, so it can be a very difficult fight, especially on your NCP's.

For a sniper always tag Gifted, and Small Frame. I would go like this:

ST: 6
PE: 9
EN: 7
CH: 2
IN: 7
AG: 9
LK: 8

Take the game slowly, try to complete as many of the missions in each town before moving on to the next location. Try to collect all of the NPC into one location, that way you can pick and choose as to who you might want to travel with you.

Grab this file if you want your NCP's to loot the bodies for you. It's been adjusted for the Restoration Project.

If I get jinx doesn't that mean I crit less? Part of the appeal of playing Unarmed [and I mean..unarmed fully, not even a brass knuckle] was so that I could bust folks in the head for huge criticals as well as the possibility of insta-killing them. Right now I play with no weapon at all using aimed shots, 2-3 shots to the head kills most humans, I hit for around 45 damage. She currently has the advanced power armor so I am finding that most guns simply don't do jack, though Ive not faced many men with energy weapons.

As for the bad guy, I was planning on going at it solo.

And for either build I never found much need for high endurance. I grind in the random encounters a lot so my levels jump and so do my HPS

The only annoying thing I have noticed for random encounters is, on my Unarmed character I usually get bandits or raiders or what ever in groups of like 12 !! Seriously what the fuck, guys.

Edit: One more thing, with the adv power armor and str chip, getting any str above 5 at character gen is a waste is it not? I made my stats with the assumption that I will be collecting more as the game goes on.

My character as of right now [I have been playing all day so he has done a lot]

For a solo shooter go high with perception and agility...then consider endurance, intelligence, and luck - forget charisma. If you stick to small guns don't go higher than 6 with strength. Later when you get power armor you will be able to use big guns without the strength penalties.

For an unarmed fighter - go high with strength, agility, and endurance. Some people don't consider high endurance that important, but by the time you reach the oil rig (about level 20 - 30) high endurance with the life giver perk will give you an extra 100+ hp. I would only choose the Jinxed perk with unarmed, since ammo isn't a problem, until you get a power fist.

Luck is the odd ability - at high levels (8+) you will have much less critical failures, and a fair share of critical hits, especially with the sniper perk. Slayer is an automatic critical whenever you hit the enemy, that with a power fist and Bonus Move will make you a killing machine, even when the odds are against you.

But play the game as you like, and when you have finished, play again with a new strategy.

PS - Don't tag Doctor, better to consider Lockpick, Steal or Big Guns...stimpaks are plentiful in the game, or just rest until healed. In the RP I found the Steal skill to be broken, even with 2% I can steal practically anything at the first attempt.

Well, with lockpick and steal, I usually save and reload... yeah I know its lame. So I have opted to not tag them, first aid can be boosted with books, and to be honest, it was either doctor, outdoorsman or science. I really couldn't figure out what else to tag. But science and outdorsman can be boosted with books, so doctor seems to be the only other skill of use that can't be raised with books.

As for big guns, I have actually yet to ever really play a character with big guns, or energy weapons for that matter. I was thinking of a big guns and fast shot build, along with an int of 3 :P retard run basically.

Isn't a cha of 6 the minimum required to complete all of the quests in the game? [for what ever quests require cha] I thought 6 cha and 7 int was the minimum for a 100% game.

Speech will do the trick... 8-)

So if I had an int of 4 and a cha of 1 but a high speech, I would still get the same quests?

Edit: So, I remade my unarmed character. lol.

I can get 10 str with armor and str chip, i can get another action point from action boy [so i can aimhit once and regular hit twice] and if I want another npc, I can get cha chip and the glasses, I plan on getting sulik] and I plan on boosting the rest of the stats from quests and items ingame. Also 2 luck from ncr.

Edit: this is weird, I am nowgetting "Error: Unable to save game" when I try to save... edit: fixed it, i was messing with my master.dat and relaoded it from the disk, not realizing that rp modifies it.

Edit: I don't know about this Jinxed stat, If I give sulik a melee weapon he hits me with it a lot, and if i leave him unarmed he cripples his own limbs almost every fight. I am really thinking about changing jinxed to something else.

I am thinking of replacing it with something, perhaps one hander, but I am not sure if that works with empty slots. Other than that, maybe good natured, I don't really need any of the other traits.

Double posted because there is no point in continuing to edit my previous post, since no one will ever read this thread anyways if I don't, and I don't think starting a new thread is the best option.

What is up with the random encounters with RP on rough battle difficulty? Seriously, I currently have myself, vic, sulik and cassidy, I am using a hunting rifle, with leather armor, the npcs all have mark 2 metal armor, cassidy has a combat shotgun, sulik has a .233 pistol and vic has a 10mm pistol [okay, vics weapon sucks].. when I roam around i also hit raiders or slavers or bands of marauders etc, with a minimum of 12-16 men. Is this really supposed to be survivable? Usualy I do not survive the first round, since they always have big guns, burst fire small guns and sniper rifles. I am about level 8... I have went in and modified the % chance for the various encounters to happen, but that alone shouldn't increase the amount of men by a metric fuckton.

So am I missing something, or am I supposed to be getting my ass kicked like this.

Looks and personality just don't matter all that much. A butt ugly bastard can still go far in life if he can speak like an angel, in fallout and in real life

And you're essentially trading stat and action points and HP for extra companion slots. I usually leave cha and end at 2 in all but unarmed and melee builds, and have never raised my charisma with the exception of the time I roleplayed a sexy beast pacifist. And odd numbered special stats are rounded down for deriving purposes so a cha of 6 or 7 would essentially be the same except when checked in scripts. Same with even vs odd number endurance when determining HP per level I think

Well, I take Gifted, take my Strength down to 5. This doesn't really hurt because Fallout's not an item-whore game like Fallout 3 and besides, you pass by a trading city every once a while so your loots are going down anyways.

As for action points, I don't trade anything, because Agility is always my highest attribute. It usually starts out at 9 and I boost it to 10 later on.

Oh and, the high charisma is simply for satisfaction, makes me think my character is a sex god or something. Well, life is tough...
