Collapsed building in Poland

Here's a little update:

The deathcount is... I'm too lazy to check. Anyway, it's less than have starved in the Third World up to when you've finished reading this.

The investigation indicates that the roof collapsed due to heavy snowfall; 25 tonnes of compressed ice were too much for it to sustain; I, actually, tend to think that the roof collapsed under the weight of sixty-six thousand feral pigeons that wanted to protest against the incarceration of their brethren, Hamas-style.

At any rate, the Prime Minister Marcinkiewicz and the Minister of Justice Ziobro are busy bees, visiting the collapse site and assuring everybody that it will be ascertained whether the managers of the expo are to be tried for negligence. Fortunately, the PM isn't as blunt as a former PM Cimoszewicz, who, after flood has stricken a few years ago, told the farmers "You should have gotten insurance", leading to his party's failure in the next elections. I was kind of expecting a "They should have been wearing hard hats" attitude from the PM, so I'm pleasantly surprised.

On the most popular internet fora, users are criticizing Marcinkiewicz for showing up on the site, saying he's aiming for an increased publicity. Incidentally, I'm sure he'd be accused of soullessness had he not paid the visits.

In a hotel room, the designer of the hall attempted to commit suicide by cutting his wrists and was taken to the hospital. Allegedly, the design was based on a similar Spanish hall, and there is significantly less snowfall in Spain, a factor that ought to have been accounted for.

The death count could have been even greater, had it not been afternoon already and many visitors had left.

Our beloved PM gave us the same kind of response in 1994(95?) when there was a flood in Piemonte, the Italian Region when Turin lies... Apparently we have shorter memory then you...

No, you don't.

I just learned that two days before that a similar hall colapsed due to snowfall in Ostrowiec. Two people died, I guess nobody noticed, because they weren't Amricans.

Another info:
After some mix-up, the death rate was lowered to 63, which is still quite big...
Well, after all, it's the biggest catastrophy in Poland...

AFAIK, "Winter" causes more deaths each year, not to mention The Biggest Catastrophy Evar that was WW2, which claimed at least two million lives in this country. Oh, and the floods of 1997.

So they could cut the raid siren wailing at noon, I'm sick of leaping out of bed and duck&covering under my desk, to my female's puzzlement and dismay.

In any case, this is certainly the dumbest event in recent years. While you can't do much about floods, having half a meter of snow on a flat roof and doing nothing about it is certainly a stupid thing to do.

In the meantime... In Ulzio (Oulx if you prefere, where the winter Olympics game are organized) a building/pavillon which was built to host journalists... collapsed becouse of the snow. No casualties or wounded people, as far as i know...

ROFL

Seen one too many war movies Wu Zi?

The point is that hardly anyone will care just a few weeks later on. Taking snow off the roofs will be a one-time event and the problem (in minds of directors and managers) would be gone. Unfortunately it's only the matter of ime till the next tragedy occurs :(. Even yesterday I saw on local TV a very similar accident but in smaller scale. And time passes ...

And now the same in Russia

At least 56 people were killed when the snow-laden roof of a Russian market collapsed, officials say.

Dozens more shoppers and staff were hurt when the roof of the busy Basmanny food market fell in at 0545 (0245GMT).

Rescuers battled all day to free the injured. As darkness fell, lights were used to illuminate the scene as cranes and diggers cleared piles of rubble.

Officials believe thick, wet snow may have triggered the collapse. A criminal negligence probe has been opened.

President Vladimir Putin has called for a "detailed inquiry".

Listening for voices

Traders were preparing for business on what was a national holiday in Russia, when a 21,530 sq ft (2,000 sq m) section of roof collapsed.

It is thought there were up to 150 people in the building, although some reports say as many as 300 use the market at night.
