Color Depth - Hardware limitation

First time out of the vault
Hi,

I have always found this site interesting, but have yet to need to post something here.

Regarding Fallout 1 and 2 running issues.

When trying to install, or after a port, run fallout on my computer, all I get is a blackscreen and the OS becomes unresponsive. It seems that the limitations is on the hardware, where the color depth is unsupported in any release of the graphics drivers. I have even tried to run it in a virtualized environment, but because the virtualized environment accesses my video card directly I run into the same problem.

I ask this after already doing alot of searching on the internet, and on here, but could not find anything that could address my specific issue.

From my trouble shooting I have determined that it is because of the 256color requirement. I was wondering if anyone has any tips regarding a patch/hack/etc that could force the program to run at a higher color depth or emulate it? I know dosbox seems to work at emulating the 256 colors, but this is limiting since fallout2 is not dos based. Anything like this for windows?

I have also tried running Winxp's compatibility mode, but it will flash briefly to, for example the install screen, then it will flash into the black unresponsive screen forcing a reboot. I would also rather not purchase it again for steam, and am unsure that this will fix the issue either. I have also seen it for sale at the walmart, as part of the original trilogy, but again unsure of it will work and would rather not repurchase it again.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks

Don't recall problems installing on Win 95 or 98,with the originals,
don't recall using the work arounds for XP, so that's not in my cognate memory.

I find the GOG versions,a single down loaded file for each, no problem at all either.
Installed on various P4s with varying video cards and XP builds.
Have installed on win emulator on Intel Mac and Mac boot camp both XP sp3.

Mod's work fine. Just remember to have the kid patch ready. Think GOG's vanilla files are childless,

$6 each for a file that's always yours to play,no DRM, They say they work on Vista too.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I am still unclear that their files are going to be any better than the ones I have now. The problem is a video card issue, and unless the software has been modified to run at a higher color depth, than I would be back to square one, but owning two copies of the same game and unable to play either.

Thanks,

The sfall patch looks promising,

However, I tried to follow the instructions of the sfall patch but reviewing my falloutw.exe in a hex editor, I see no address. I also have no reference to a ddraw.dll or ddraw.ini in the file or on my computer.

Thanks

hex editor? You appear to be trying to follow the instructions for the win 9x version...
