Comp crashed while installing FO2...

First time out of the vault
Well, I seem to have a problem. I pulled FO2 out of its box and started playing again, then the other day I found out about all the mods out there and decided to give megamod a try. I uninstalled, DL's megamod and its updates in preparation to play. I was installing FO2 again from the cd in humungo mode when I lost power about half way through the install and my comp obviously crashed.

I then restarted when I had power and didn't have the option to install again but could "play". ovbiously the game didn't work as it didn't complete the install. I then tried to uninstall but that didnt work. Deleted everything manually and then tried to reinstall again, but it just seems to get to the same halfway point as the original crash then tells me to just click on the FO2 icon to play the game in the Black Isles-> FO2 folder. This doesnt work though as the game isnt fully installed. I have tried deleting everything many times, run registry cleans, defragging, running the install manually off the cd but none of this seems to work. Reboots do nothing, it just gets to that same half way point of the install then stops.

Anyone have any ideas on how to get this working? Thanks much in advance for any ideas! I can't wait to give these mods a try!! Hell, I'd even be happy to just get FO2 working normally again! [/list]

I can only hope that the CD isn't scratched. Check that and get back to us. It could also be useful to point out your system specs.

You could try reading the stickies, you know the ones that say READ BEFORE POSTING in big shiny letters that everyone seems to be able to completely ignore, where there is a very detailed guide to manually installing the game.

I have read the sticky's and done searches, nothing helped. the cd isn't scrached. Running a core 2 duo 2.0ghz 2gb RAM and a GeForce Go 7600. The manual install runs into the same problem.

Any other tips would be greatly appreciated...

What same problem? Does it have an install screen that just quits at the halfway point? Because, you know it doesn't.

No the game just won't load, I get an error about loading the script or something, though I have tried the fix that someone posted somwhere on here and that doesn't work. Thanks for the smart ass replies though. I will look somewhere else for help where I don't have to deal with internet attitudes.

Okay, thanks for calling, you can annoy other people by asking for help and not giving enough information.

Sorry for my comment Sander, I was just really annoyed trying to figure this out. i've been working on it a few days now, but I figured out my problem. My cd has a slight scratch on it which is causing problems with the critter.dat folder on a manual install. Odd though as it intalled last week just fine using the auto setup.

Anyone here able to possibly mail me the critter.dat folder? Or perhaps transfer it somehow using MSN messenger or something similar? I have the original US version of the game(yeah, i've had it a LONG time). It would be much appreciated! Not sure how else to remedy this except getting a new cd, and i'm not sure how possible that is...

Also, I just read about a polish called Brasso that can be used to fix cd's, anyone ever tried it or anything like it to help with scratches? I don't think toothpaste is abrasive enough to wear the sctarches on the plastic down enough to help the laser read more clearly.

Toothpaste and Rubbing Alcohol should be all you need. For me, it works like a charm.

Thanks Doc, Ill grab some rubbing alcohol and give it a try.

Remember to use optical-grade/very soft fabric and to wipe in lines radiating from the center of the disc. This provides am much better effect the rubbing the cloth around the center, in a concentric fashion.

Well, no love with fixing the scratches.

Is it possible for anyone to email me the critter.dat folder or is it too large?
