Compatibility with english/non-english mods

Bob The Hamster

First time out of the vault
My FO2 disk had a corrupt critters.dat, so I've had to go and buy a new copy. The thing is, I now live abroad and the new copy is in another language (I *think* its Russian, but I'm not 100% sure - all I know is I bought it in Bulgaria, its in cryllic, but its not Bulgarian).

Will mods I create using the foreign version work with other peoples English versions?

The official mapper is working fine along side it with english characters causing no problem, I'm just wondering if there's some fundеmental difference in the localised engines.

There is a work around - I can install from the UK version and copy the critters.dat from the new disk, but this causes (albelit minor) display problems in the actual game (though not the mapper) so I'd rather not do that unless I have to.

Using the work around, mods appear to work fine, but since its a composite of the two versions, I'm still not sure if it will work with a completely-english version, if you see what I mean.

As far as I know the critter.DAT only contains critters art files and a .LST file (which contains the names of all the other files). In short:
if you don't use other material from your bulgarian copy, then I'm 99% sure there will be no troubles.
Apart from this, I don't think that the engine is localized, just the .MSG files... At least, this seems to be the case of the german version. I do know about the violence settings issue, but apparently no german modders worried about compatibility issues... Would you tell what the minor display problems, please?
Bye.

Thanks. I'm releived to here it should be okay.

The display issus are difficult to put into words.

Deathclaw animation is wrong. When they attack, their hands are shown in the starting position and in the attack position at the same time - sort of blurred animation. The same goes for the rad scorpions with the additional trait of them appearing to attack from one hex further away than usual.

When you're fighting an enclave patrol, the animation is too fast as though you're playing in fast turn based even when you're not.

I've not played it much since replacing the CD, so there might be more, but thats it so far.

These wrong animations are not what I'd call minor troubles... Apparently the game engine cannot handle animations properly. But then it's a problem caused by the data read...
I know you already posted a few times about your critter.DAT. If you try to run both the game and the mapper using a minimal install (i.e. all DATs files are on the cd), then does your flawed Fo2 copy work? If I'm correct you need unpacked critter.DAT only if you need to make new critter protos. If the thing does work then you don't need to worry about it. You place a critter proto on a map and your players get that proto read from theyr cds. Please tell me if the minimal install does work.
Bye.

The game works on minimum install (none of the larger installs though), but some graphics are completely missing.

The editor flashes the screen black then exits straight back to windows (and I did try everything suggested in the stickies to make it work).

I checked the checksums of the files against others posted on this forum and the only one that didnt match up was critters so I'm almost certain that has to be the problem one way or another

Then you have only two options:
A) In the best case you manage to get your hands on a US/GB disk. Only way to have everything to work completely fine.
B) You use your bulgarian critter.DAT. You'll get the display mistakes, but the mod itself should run fine... This is untested though... You're the first one to have this problem, at the best of my knowledge.
By the way, you probably already stumbled upon this but: you DO NEED to get the children arts, or the mapper will crash anyway. Your bulgarian copy should have them. You can get them in the files section, if needed.
Sorry I couldn't help more. Bye.

Edit (2-22-06)
This could be tricky but should work:
Install your bulgarian copy, I mean full install... At this point you can unpack the related .DATs or not...
Unpack the english master.DAT instead, you need only two folders from it: data and text. "Set" into the bulgarian installation these two folders, they contain all the game text. Remember to edit fallout2.cfg and set default language back to english.
Other than this I really fear that the first two options I spoke you of are the only ones available...
