Concept for a film based on the Fallout Universe Timeline

EyeGod

First time out of the vault
Hi guys.

This is my first post here (I posted this post in the Order forum as well), and the reason for it being that I am interested in adapting a part of the Fallout timeline into a screenplay.

Now what happened to me last year was I started adapting Philip K Dick's "A Scanner Darkly" and to my dismay I discovered that it had already been done and that all my hard work was for nothing.

I already have a plot outline, a brief character bible and a synopsis, but I don't want to proceed before knowing whether I can and should do this or not.

Does anyone know anything about the legalities regarding intellectual properties, and whether the Fallout copyright is under option?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Eye

Heh I just read the whole Fallout: A Post Nuclear Movie thread posted earlier.

Let me just state this: this screenplay will NOT be based on Fallout 1. It will be based on events in the Fallout timeline. The idea is to set the stage for a possible trilogy (bear with me).

This idea has been twirling around in my head for years now. I'm now a qualified scriptwriter (for what it's worth) and my intension is writing a script so good that I can send it off to a studio and blow them away. Being a South African in that regard is quite a problem, but where there's a will there's a way, and if a story's good enough people will listen.

The Fallout history is just SOOO rich, and is such an intelligent reflection on a possible future for mankind that I think a film based on the timeline will not only serve to please fans: it will serve to just make people aware of what's going on in the world today- make them aware that if we continue on the route we are going on right now we might end up with a dystopian future not too disimilar to that of Fallout's.

Um........... the Fallout story is the intellectual property of Interplay.........

That would sort of make that movie somethign that a studio wouldnt do.

Also, it sounds like youre idea is going to be a "preaching" movie, that is one that attempts to preach a philosiphy or viewpoint to the audince.... not a good thing.

Further... POST the damned script, or at least your idea in detail pls.

PsychoPal, stop being crass, please.

To EyeGod: If you already read the other movie-related thread then you've probably seen my views on a FO movie. Either way, I think it could be done well or done horribly. Resident Evil: Apocalypse is a horrible, horrible example of a game-to-movie story. I can't think of a good example of one well done right now but I'm sure there's a couple out there I'm not aware of.

PsychoSniper, even being crass, does have a point. Trying to use Fallout as a base for a movie where your main intention is to give a message probably won't sit well with most fans and probably not with the general population. Peopel should derive their own meaning from a piece of work rather than having it thrust in their face. - Colt

I don't want to post all the details regarding the concept just yet- it is still too sketchy... I will say however that the story will be centered around The Great War- events leading up to the advent of Fallout 1.

With regards to the intellectual property, how does one then get the owners to sell their rights? Obviously I don't have the money for it, so would you have to be commissioned by a studio or something?

You must understand that this is one of my greatest dreams. I will work as hard as I must for it, even if it takes me 10 to 20 years to get it done.

Is there a way I could contact someone from Interplay maybe?

Agreed. Resident Evil: Apocalypse came out two weeks ago in my country. I saw it a few days ago and was terribly disappointed (being a huge fan of the game series). Trust me, this is not the angle I will approach this script with. As I said in my previous post, it will NOT be based on Fallout, but on the universe.

Ok, let me rephrase then- the idea of this film is not to shove a message down someone's throat: it is to tell the truth. In all writing, telling the truth is the most important thing. You reap the truth from your life experiences, and it is different from individual to individual, but when something rings true, it echoes through all humanity.

As an example, what meaning did you derive from "Saving Private Ryan"? Everyone's meaning will be different, but the film itself contains a meaning- an aesthetic emotion, if you want to call it that, which serves as a vehicle for the individual who craves to derive his own meaning.

I'm not sure how you would get in contact with Interplay right now, they're not exactly having the best time as it is. Other people who have been around the forums longer should know though. It would be best to have a studio behind you though so they know you're serious about buying them. - Colt

I don't know if there's a way to contact anybody at Interplay directly anymore. Here's the contact page for Bethesda http://www.bethsoft.com/contact.html
They have the rights to make Fallout games, and could probably give you the contact information for someone at Interplay.

I think they only have the rights to make the next three Fallout RPGs, not the Fallout license itself. I think Interplay still has that filed away somewhere.
