Crashing Problem w/ Fallout2

Crashing Problem

Hi, im new to these boards (just recently found them by luck) and have a severe crashing problem with Fallout 2.

Background:
Just recently, i found a Fallout 2 disc. I heard from a friend that this game was better than BG2 (and i loved BG2) so i decided to give it a shot. I have never played this game before. Fallout 2 appeared to install correctly via setup. Game starts fine.

Computer Specs:
P4 1.4gig processor
GeForce 4 MX
512 ram
3gigs of free hard drive space, not including FO2
Windows XP
Old School Sound Blaster Pro :p
(Yeah, i could use some massive upgrades, but from what i can tell these specs should still be more than adequate to run FO2)

Problem:
Upon running the game, during movies, the game just crashes to desktop. It also freezes everything and requires a ctrl+alt+del to exit. This happens during the intro movie where it explains how humans didn't have enough space to live, etc.

Another point of crashing is the beginning movie. Where some robed figure tells u about a Chosen One. I dont know much about this because it crashes pretty quickly.

Note: These movies can be skipped by clicking early enough to prevent crashing.

Other than that, the game seemed to run fine. Character creation worked like a pro. The Temple of Trials level seemed to run fine.
After beating Cameron, the next movie where u see like a shirt, again crashes.

Sadly, skipping this video doesn't work though. After skipping this video, right when it says i received exp for winning, the entire game freezes but doesn't crash to desktop. I've yet to progress past this part.

Solutions:
I've tried damn near everything to remedy my situations. Such methods ive used were:
- A bajillion reinstalls
- The manual install
- Setting the game to run in win95, 98, 2000
- Shutting everything off prior to playing
- Shutting down my video card
- Setting dxdiag to basic
- 800 x 600 and 16bit resolution
- Even ran a defrag because i recall seeing something on this site referring to that.

Note: I will admit that the manual install was a bit confusing for me. While i was able to get the game working via the manual install (sadly with the usual crashing), there were certain aspects of it that i didn't understand.
1) I could not find the PATCH000.DAT file anywhere on my CD. I was however able to find the other 3 files.
2) I did not quite understand what was meant by creating my own config file. What i did was copy and paste what was posted on the Manual Install thread on notepad, and named the file Config.cfg. Whether this is correct, i have no idea.

Nothing has worked, and im damn near ready to drive down to my relatives place to get my old P2 100 just to play this game. If anyone has any other methods to get this to work, any advice at all, i will greatly appreciate it.

It should be named Fallout2.cfg - if it's crashing during manual install it's probably due to this. If there isn't any patch000.dat or patch000.___ file on your CD then download the patch from here:
http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php?action=category&cat_id=16

What do you mean by setting dxdiag to "basic"? Did you manage to disable Hardware Acceleration?

First, apply the 1.02 patch!

If it still doesn't work, here are other things to do:
- Update video drivers (and any other drivers you might have, say BUS mastersing etc)
- Apply SP1 and the windows updates.
- Make sure you have latest DirectX version

Really wack ideas, probably mostly useless so if you don't understand them, just don't mind them :P
-Perhaps disabling HyperThreading in the BIOS?
-Extract all DAT files into their original files and remove the DATs and all the MVE files except perhaps VSUIT.MVE since it triggers the change of the player from a tribal to a valut suit. You could perhaps change it to another movie that might work.
- Install the FO2 logging patch and see if the log file reports any errors when crashing
- Try the DirectX debug binaries with maximum debugging options (dunno why that would work really but sometimes you never know) - you'd need the DirectX SDK to do that which is a hefty download.

Well, if it's any confort your PCs specs have nothing to do with it.

64mbRAM
16MBvoodoo3 vid card
10gig HD

those be my shit box's specs, and FO/FO2 run fine on it.

I ran Fallout and Fallout 2 on a Pentium 150Mhz, 32 mbRAM and a S3 2Mb vid card. and about 1.5 gig HD and a Soundblaster 16 Pro ( Or something like that). So I would doubt it's his specs.

If it crashes during movies then maybe it has something to do with the GeForce 4 MX and it's drivers. Or video codecs ( Not sure if Fallout's need these but... ).

No, FO should have it's own codecs and stuff.

The program runs the videos on it's own, so that would make sense.

Hmm... You do have a legal copy of the game right? What version is the game and have you patched it yet? And if yes, which patches did you use?

If you have an old SoundBlaster Pro with modern motherboards/CPU's/Graphics cards/etc. then these might not like each others? Are you sure that there are no conflicts between certain components? There are no yellow triangles in the window thingy where you can see your computer's components?

Hi, im relatively new to these boards (only posted once), and have a severe crashing problem w/ Fallout 2.

Background:
Awhile back, i had the exact same crashing problems. I was however using an illegal copy. After trying close to every trick in the book (or at least all the tricks given to my by the helpful FO community) i gave up on playing, blaming my problems on my copy. Fast forward about 4 months. Yesterday, while walking around Fry's Electronics, i happen to find the Fallout1 and 2 combo set for 5 dollars! You can imagine how happy i was knowing that i can probably finally play this game. Everything seemed to install fine, but sadly the same crashing problems occured.

Computer Specs:
Athalon 2.4gig processor
Radeon 9800 pro
512 ram
over 20 gigs of free hard drive space, not including FO2
Windows XP pro
Internal Motherboard Soundcard :p
(im assuming my comp specs are sufficient enough to play. If anything maybe they are too advanced for the game?)

I also have not downloaded or installed any patches. Im only using the CD that came in the box.

Nothing has worked, although i do have access to a comp w/ the following specs now:

P2 100
Geforce 2 Ti
Old school Soundblaster Live (quite possibly the first soundblaster live ever available)
128 ram
4 gig hardrive

If all else fails i suppose i could install win95/98 on this pos comp if my current specs wont run it. If possible i'd like to avoid doing this though. Any help/advice will be greatly appreciated.

You might have already tried this as part of disabling your video card, but I'll suggest it anyway: Right click on your desktop, select properties, select settings, click the advanced button, then select the troubleshooting tab. Set the hardware acceleration to None and see if the movies run.

If that doesn't work and if no one can solve your problem you could probably replace all the in game cutscenes with blank files.

If you have a copy of Windows 95 or 98 lying around you might be able to install it on a seperate partition and run the game that way as well.

Oddly enough, i did not. After doing this though, everything seems to work perfectly! :O :O :O

So far all movies are working like a pro. Hopefully the rest of the game will be just as tip-top. Thanks again Montez, u are the master.
