Sir Dingly Dang
First time out of the vault
Edit: It seems to work now. I reinstalled, applied the patch and left the .bos files as they were and then put back all the save files and whatever I'd changed. I also left out the no-cd patch and the HighRes patch initially but installed the resolution patch and it works. The culprit must've been the no-cd patch or the unpacked files but right now I'm not gonna test the no-cd patch, I just wanna play the damn game. Been dying to play it for weeks.
Now my only concern is will the bonus mission work? I'd activated it before starting out with my current characters and I reactivated it after reinstalling before loading one of my saves. I really want to play it though, I've had bad luck with it before and haven't managed to play it more than once a long time ago.
I keep crashing just after entering the bunker after finishing Brahmin Wood. I can move around for 10 seconds or so and then I hear a weird bzzt noise and the game CTD's with this message:
BOS.exe has stopped working.

The game's patched to 1.27, .bos files unpacked with booster and patch reapplied after. I also use the HiResolution patch, a no-cd patch and I've replaced the ReaverMale.SPR with the fixed one.
I've got a custom made squad so first I thought I did something wrong with them and it turned out I had actually forgotten to add names and bios to the characters.txt file but replaying the first mission with the characters fixed didn't help.
Then I suspected that unpacking the .bos files had corrupted something but reunpacking and reapplying the patch didn't help either.
I'm at a total loss as to what's causing the crash. If no-one can figure out what's wrong I'm gonna try a full reinstall next and try the savegames again.
I'm on 32bit Vista (with UAC turned off) and my specs are:
GF 8800 GT 512mb
2 gb RAM
Intel core q6600
Edit: I didn't install DirectX 8.0a, does that matter?
