Curious to know if this has been done - Weapon Repairing MOD

SlyMaelstrom

First time out of the vault
I was looking to create a mod that enhanced the weapon repairing system... but I saw something in the "Suggestions" thread that seemed to suggest that Bethesda already did this. Perhaps the wording was just not very good, though, because I didn't see it in the game.

The mod I wanted to make would allow players with a repair skill of 75 or above to break down a weapon into component parts for the use of repairing other weapons at a later time. The goal being to decrease the weight in your inventory. Personally, at times when playing the game I found myself carrying an extra Combat Shotgun or Chinese Assault Rifle just so I could repair my main one after it gets badly damaged. Wouldn't you see, in a real life scenario, a gun expert taking apart the spare weapon and only bringing the components that are likely to break and necessary for repairs?

The way it would work is this. When your repair skill is high enough, you can enter the Pip-Boy's Weapons page and hover over the weapon. Underneath the option "R" for repair, you would have the option "D" for disassemble. You would then lose the weapon (let's say in this case it's a Chinese Assault Rifle weighing 7lbs) and gain an item "Parts: Chinese Assault Rifle" which would weight 2lbs and would then appear in the list if you tried to repair a Chinese Assault Rifle.

This could also play into weapon modification... for instance if one wanted to disassemble a Scoped .44 Magnum and put the scope on an Assault Rifle one could perhaps do so.

... anyway, let me know if any of you have heard of this or seen it. If you haven't, let me know if you think you'd use it.

Weapons ...

... Need some sort of routine maintenance .... but this wear out stuff is annoying .... I could leave an Ak lying in the wasteland in a cave or open ground .... after a yr or more kick open the bolt to unstick it lock in a Mag and Rock and Roll .... without skipping a beat

a 44 mag revolver ...

no problem ... sawed off shotgun Phft ...

maybe the electronics in a Plasma Weapon need fine tuning ....

and yeah breaking something down into the replaceable parts make sense ...

I tend to agree guns shouldn't fall apart as quickly as they do in the game. I have a Hunting rifle I've shot thousands of times and it has yet to get damaged. Mind you I clean it monthly.

Perhaps allow for people to repair weapons through the skills. With a kit to enhance the skills. Also allow people to manufacture weapon specific kits by breaking down weapons, collecting parts and combining them back into kits. It sounds more complicated then it is.

A alternative solution is to give players a gun cleaning kit which doesn't need that much repair skills to use. Just clean the gun after use and it slows down degradation. Rather then fix it, prolong its life and slow down how fast it breaks.

You cant really use scrap metal. Then again we could make gun parts with scrap metal. All Id need is a Smelter , forms and a anvil for a few parts. Its not as high tech for rifles. Albeit make a barrel wrong BOOOOM! Your in deep shit. Rest of the parts and your just looking at a jam if you did it wrong. Well except maybe the magazine.

until you realize that the wasteland has caused enough rust on the breach of the barrel that it erodes it dangerously thin. your rifle seems to work fine until you find that it explodes in your face. or a more likely happening on an ak is that the gas tube develops cracks and rusts and then all of the sudden the weapon cant build enough gas pressure to push the bolt back far enough for proper case ejection, usually resulting in a shit ton of double feeds. hell your firing pin could be all coated in rust and then when you start firing the weapon the pin chips into a jagged point causing it to pierce the primer of any round in the weapon thus resulting in the weapon being utterly useless, able to feed but unable to fire.

lol, my real world occupation is best described as fixing weapons for people who shoot terrorists. i know the ins and outs of firearms, and what could possibly go wrong. though the truth is that the m16 and ak47(both incredibly simple weapons) are VERY VERY easy to maintain and keep in working order. usually when i actually have to replace something on a m16 its because some dumnshit slammed it in a humvee door or something resulting in a barrel that isnt straight.

if you want specific parts for this mod you should break it down into a couple basics.... have firing pins, bolts, gas pistons and gas tubes. that should cover the basics.... things like the extractor come with the bolt/bolt carrier group so you shouldnt have to worry bout that, and the average wastelander wouldn't have the tools to remove a barrel and replace it on a weapon such as a fn-fal or a m16. the things the break the most are the bolt faces and firing pins in that order. gas tubes are also extremely common, often they will develop a crack and leak gas.

now making weapons out of scraps is distinctly possible. the afgani have been doing it for a hundred years by hand. the authorities in that region are highly annoyed as the gunsmiths wind up using scrap metal stolen from hundreds of miles around, railroad ties wind up being re worked and turned into weapons that other then the quality of the metal are so identical to the legally produced counterparts that it takes an expert to tell the difference. they usually even print fake serial numbers and manufacture locations on the weapons. that trade has produced one of the largest gun bazaars around. one of the few places that you can actually find a purchase rare weapon like ww2 stg44's.

Hmm good Points ...

but after piecing a few "Parts" Guns together ... certainly an AK or FN FAL should not wearing out so fast.

if anything the AMMO Should the the "Suspect" part of the equastion ... I played Gamma World for several yrs ... and if you did not sort your ammo for potential Duds ... you failure rolls went up drastically for Click ..... Click, Click Click ... crap ....

simple guns like the

.32 Pistol
.44 Mag

revolvers are about as basic as you can get ... hammer springs may go thin in the grip ...

anyway I think we agree a better system is needed ...

ammo failure and sorting, did you clean the weapon recently ....

yeah maybe Fancy Laser and Plasma Weapons need electronics adj. and re collimated ...

Oh yeah and the FN-FAL should be .308 not .556

and I'd love to see a Dragunov Replace the Sniper in Game ... Persoanl Preferance

I remember someone saying Repair was a waste of points. I haven't found it to be a waste. I have a 35 Repair at level 5 (almost 6). Its a useful skill, plus I fixed the leaks in Megaton.

Also I see mention that there isn't enough to spend your money on. If you don't built up your repair paying for repairs aren't cheap. Plus ammo, plus buying upgrades for your house can cost upwards of 8k caps. I haven't found myself with tons of extra cash yet. Perhaps that will change.

Still caps and repair are useful.

Once you get your repair skill up around 75 you can repair things better than any NPC. The condition also determines the amount of damage your weapons deal, and they deal quite a bit more damage at 90% condition than 50%-> .

My only guess as to why they degrade so fast is A) game balance and B) the guns are all 200+ years old.
