Custom music

Neo Nightkin

First time out of the vault
I'm wondering if it's possible to put any none acm music file into fallout.
I tried this by renaming the selected music for a certain town in the map.text file to my own music, in this case ship.wav.
I tried to play the map, but now there was no music at all.
Is there some way to change what type of music files are needed to play?
If not, does anyone know where to get a (free) wav to acm or mp3 to acm converter?
I tried a few, one of which from DAC, and it didn't work for me.

as far as i know, only as files work for the music.

there are a few wav to acm converters about.. look in the files section on NMA and on DAC, try looking in both fallout 1 and fallout 2 pages..

Like I said before, I couldn't get the one at DAC to work.
I looked in NMA, but there are only ACM to WAV converters, not the other way around...

Yes, I remember I tried one at there site, but I tried it again anyway.
This one doesn't work for me either!
I converted to sound file to the proper input format, 22050Hz, 16 bits, and it still doesn't work
Can anyone explain to me how to make it work?

Just for curiosity, are there two ACM formats in Fallouts? I mean when I listen the musics with my WinAmp (with plugin) everything is ok, but when I listen e.g. narrator speaks voice comes out with too high speed...

i think the bitrate is stored in the file somewhere, so it plays voices slower ( lower bitrate ).. try lowering the playback bitrate of the converted file..

There is only one type of ACM files in Fallout. It is ACM itself :)

But the same format is used in two ways: as music and as sound effects (game events, environmental sounds, speech...). The only difference is in the properties of source WAVs.

If you need new background music, you have to make it from 22050 Hz, 16bit, stereo source file. And the sfx-files should be mono. That's all.

As regards to Winamp plugin, the version prior 1.2b could play ACMs only as stereo files. That's why narrator's speech is twice faster than the original.
Unfortunately, it is impossible to detect count of channels in ACM automatically.
