Day of the Triffids

Hotel California

Mildly Dipped
Whilst reading my 30 year of novel from a quintessential English second hand book shop i was struck by its similarity to fallout. They made a really bad sixties film, but we'll stick to the book for now. To those who don't know (and I don't blame you, its ancient) Day of the Triffids is a 1950's novel which essentially foretells the break down of society due to a 'unscheduled comet shower'. This brings green flashes in the sky, which after a great percentage of the population has seen their awesomeness, blinds them all. (Is it just me or do the worst things in sci fi come in green flashes; blinding comets, Martians, turbo plasma rifle bolts  ) The only survivors (unblind) are those who could not or did not see the green lights. The survivors emerge into a silent world inhabited by the groaning masses of the blind, who wander from shop front to street corner searching for food and liquor. A few noble sighted people take it upon themselves to feed and lead the blind, but this only delays the enevitable. Most of the sighted of london are drawn to the university by a huge searchlight in the sky, and these men plan to build the their lives anew.

OK, back to the point, the comet shower wasn't actually an accentual comet shower. It was a weapons satellite that malfunctioned (?!). This really reminds me of those bombs in fallout.
Also, i've failed to mention about the triffids. These things either fell from space, were created by the Russians, or mutated naturally. They are huge carnivorous plants with a single long stinger, the poison of which is deadly enough to kill a man. They have three short stubby roots, which oddly enough can be moved and allow the triffid to walk. They feed on human flesh and are very resistant to bullets (except to immobilise). Fire is the only thing that really hurts them -(Use for fallout's lesser used flamethrower here). Individually they are about as intelligent as a small dog, but in numbers gang up on survivors and encampments.

Humanity has survived in a greatly reduced number. They have banded together in manors or towns (the cities were destroyed by plauge). Some wish for others to join them and use force to bring the struggling remnants to order. These are a paramilitary organisation, who control Bristol. A band of survivors led by the university has colonised the Isle of Wight and are clearing it from Triffids. For those of you who haven't already left here comes my point. I loved this book and how it dealt with the collapse of society. I feel it would make a perfect RPG in fallout style. It has a sci-fi retro fifties setting and shows a world brought to its knees with survivors trying to build life anew. Whilst there is no power armour or plasma rifles, there are abundant low grade weapons, such as shotguns, rifles, flamethrowers and light machine guns (if one looks in the right place)

I am no modder. I cannot code very well, use the map creator or create animations. I am wholly willing to learn, but have not explored any of the ways of doing this. I have ideas. I’d like to make a mod involving this book and am open to suggestions, ideas or citicism …

First time I saw the spore plants I thought 'Triffids', first time I read your post I thought '[ROE] Snake'.

Triffids didn't tend to move around a lot in the film or tv series, they'd more likely hide amongst other plants rather than chase you around. Well it'd be even worse than the Daleks to have a Triffids chase scene.

So you could probably do a mod using the existing spore plants and a little creative scripting.

Time to crack open the tutorials.

My feelings are that whilst the triffids who play a signifcant part in the feel of it all, they are a side project, first i must learn how to mod and create the story. Do you know of any good tutorials on map design, scripting or mod making.

On an aside, how difficult would it be to create a new animation?

Check the "READ BEFORE POSTING" topic in the fallout modding/hacking & project announcements. that topic should help you alot

I read the book, my english teacher made us. It was one of the few things I still thank him for doing. (The other thing was making us read Of Men and Mice...) I also thought of Fallout during the biggest part of the book. That's probably why I liked it so much.

Anyhoo, after I finish my exams, maybe I can also look into modding and such, and try to help you. If you don't mind, that is. Maybe we can get some more people to help.

I too am doing exams, GCSEs to be precise, which is why this currently is just a fantasty. Today i should've been revising for Biology, but instead have been reading tutorials and getting very confused! But no worries. I'm sorry for being a noob Oracle, i realise that it is covered in tutorials and other threads. It was a question on if the effort required would be much greater than the reward.
Morp, this is a yet just a dream but i appreciate the offer. It would be good fun to make, I'm glad you enjoyed the book!

Me the same. Look like they inspired by many sources, but ok.

I'm reading the book again (started right after I finished reading 1984), and I was thinking, it would be funny (maybe) to get rid of all the npc's and stuff in the entire game, and then put spore-plants randomly throughout the maps. And also add some more trees and grass and stuff... and make everything look deserted. I wonder how this will make NCR look.

Actually that sounds a bit nifty. Player is expelled from vault (o.n.e.) as in the original Fo1 plot and finds himself in an extremely open-ended mystery disappearance plot with bits and pieces of information to be found among the debris and ubiquitous spore plants, and only pockets of xenophobic survivors to be found and/or interacted with with great difficulty. The objective/macguffin wouldn't necessarily have to be directly related to the "triffids".

Hmm yeah, the objective would be to end up on the Isle of White, which you only find out about in the end... the triffids are just a big nuisance...

The flamethrower would be such a great gun to play with in that situation...

I agree that this is a mod just begging to be done.

Flamethrowers and shotguns... he actually uses the shotgun in the book. Sais it's better than a rifle...

I haven't read that book in sooo long.. once I've got to the bottom of my pile of books to read I'll go hunt down my copy and read it again, you never know, it might inspire me to make a fallout/day of the triffids minigame.

I have a niji-star projectile from FOT that could be used as a triffid-gun 'bullet'

I've already converted the animation to a FRM.

Hmm, I have an idea... one quest would be to escort a group of blind people somewhere... and when you enter combat they act like Ian all the time... so you shoot all of them, get bad karma, don't tell the people that gave you the quest but tell them the Trif's got them and voila... uhm, yeah...

Or use them for Triffid Scouting...

"Now, I know that you are scared, but I assure you, there are no Triffids in the hedge waiting to kill you... now, just walk straight ahead... *swish... deafening scream... * Hmm... next!"
