Daytona 500 Predictions

It Wandered In From the Wastes
Before I go to bed, I'll post the three drivers I like to win the Daytona 500: a sure bet, a fall-back, and a dark horse.

Sure Bet: Dale Earnhardt Jr.: Well, how could I NOT pick him to be the favorite? Now that Greg Biffle, the polesitter, had to change engines and fall back, Junior is on the pole. That, and his Dale Earnhardt Inc. team wins restrictor plate races like they're going out of style- between him and his teammate Michael Waltrip, they won 9 of the last 12 restrictor plate races at Daytona and Talledega.
If his alternator doesn't go south this year, Junior's golden.

Fall-Back: Dale Jarret: After a bad year last year, Jarret is ready for a comeback. Where better to do it than win a race that he won three times? Also, he won the Bud Shootout last week. The last times Jarret won the Shootout, in '96 and 2000, he won the Daytona 500. Oh, and Robert Yates Racing teammate, Elliot Sadler, is showing signs of brilliance- he qualified second- and the engine partnership with Roush Racing is paying dividends already.

Dark Horse: Kevin Lepage: I honestly like Lepage and his team at Morgan McLure Motorsports. MMR is no stranger to success at Daytona- Ernie Irvan won one for them in '91, and Sterling Marlin won two in '94 and '95. And Lepage is set for MMR to start the comeback engines, so to speak. He was running strong in his Twin 125 race until his engine broke, and he did get the fastest practice time in practice Friday. Also consider his qualifying speed- 187.876 miles per hour. Speed is clearly not an issue.

Have fun, and tune in to NBC around 12:45 PM.

He almost choked to death on a pretzle so I'd say getting hit by a car would be no problem for him.

Well, my sure bet was spot on.
The only "where in the hell did he come from" suprise was Scott Wimmer, who finished third. Rookies aren't supposed to be that good in the Daytona 500.
Also, the exact date that Dale Sr. won his Daytona 500 was Feburary 15, 1998. Guess the stars were aligned or something. :)
