'Deep Throat' returning to theaters

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- "Deep Throat," the infamous 1972 adult film that led to a government crackdown on pornography, is being re-released in theaters as a new generation of lawmakers wages a renewed assault on smut, trade paper Daily Variety reported in its Tuesday edition.

The release of the Linda Lovelace opus, which was banned at the time in 23 states, coincides with the premiere of the documentary "Inside Deep Throat," which hits theaters in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Boston on Friday.

The original film, which was made in six days for $25,000 and has allegedly grossed more than $600 million, will not be ready until at least February 18, the paper said. Las Vegas-based Arrow Prods., which owns the rights to the mob-funded "Deep Throat," started striking 10 prints on Monday, it added.

Five of the prints will be edited to garner an "R" rating, which allows admission to children aged under 17 if accompanied by an adult.

The documentary, co-produced by Brian Grazer, the Oscar-winning filmmaker of "A Beautiful Mind," is rated NC-17, which denies admission to anyone aged 17 and under.

It shows how "Deep Throat" popularized a form of sexual pleasure previously considered taboo. But the Nixon administration was not amused, sending in the FBI to close down screenings, and taking legal action against the film's director, Jerry Damiano, and stars.

Meanwhile, a bill that would increase fines for smutty broadcasts to $500,000 per incident from $32,500 is wending its way through Congress with bipartisan support, inspired in part by Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction" at the Super Bowl last year.

Interestingly this movie was bashed and defended- by feminists for saying that a woman's only sexual pleasure came in pleasing a man, and by those that said it was the first time a woman's sexual pleasure was taken seriously.

ANother view below, points out that Deep Throat drew such crowds of people (including grandparents) that it was one of the few times that society could actually engage in a frank discussion about sex, but that this was quashed by the moral right.

I liked the climax best of all.

While i agree that children under a certain age shouldn't view that type of film, i think that the government trying to play the "Sex Police" by upping the fine on "smutty broadcasts" is a bit off where the film is concerned.

There's a difference between a nip slip on live TV in the middle of a football game, which was undoubtedly being viewed by families around the world, and an edited down porn movie aired in a theater that prevents those who may be too young from entering.

True, kids could sneak in without parents, but you can't govern these kinds of things based on the fact that a small group may view without permission.

I think the moralistic view of it all dates back to the days of the Puritans, when taking pleasure in anything was considered a sin. No doubt religion plays a big part in it as well.

Personally i see nothing wrong with the porn industry, if you don't like it, don't watch it. If a person wants to be in or watch porn, that's their discission. What's right for one person may very well be wrong for another. People just need to learn to accept people for what they are.

I was watching anderson cooper 360 and he talked about it. he also talked about this guy with porn addiction and a female bigamyst. that show is so smutty and classless. nothing is really factual, and he just talks out of his ass like an actor playing the role of newshow host.

Well, at least you weren't watching The No Spin Zone.

I've never seen the original Deep Throat. I ought to rent it.

I don't know- the porn industry seems so private now with all the internet stuff. There seems little need or reason to go to a theatre that does porn, not if you have a dvd/vhs player at home.

Maybe that's unfortunate. If porn was still something the public patronizes in groups, sexual discussion would be more open and acceptable.

Or, people could, like, get real women instead of waxing the shaft.

On the contrary, I think sexual discussion can never take place in the current political and religious atmostphere if its in the open and face to face. The only way that a frank discussion can occur today in America is via a private and anonymous system, like the internet and forums. Otherwise the God Police will pull on the leash of the officials they fund.
