Direct X problem

It Wandered In From the Wastes
My monitor has died and so I'm sharing a computer with my roomate. I would love to be able to play fallout 1 and 2 on this computer, but the video card doesn't seem to want to use Direct X. I get a solid green title screen and the game is not playable. The video card is described on the computer as far as I could look into it as a "Standard VGA graphics adapter". Chip type, "ATI Rage128". The only lead to fixing this problem I had was to open DXDIAG and change the directdraw settings, but I don't have the option of changing them. It just says "Not Available" where the option should be. Is this video card simply incompatible with DirectX, or is there some way I can fix this?

We're running Vista Home Basic

If windows is recognizing the video card as a "Standard VGA Adapter" then the video card drivers are corrupt or not installed. Re-install the latest drivers for the ATI Rage 128.

Thanks for the info, but I've tried using device manager to find the latest drivers, and it tells me it's up to date, and doesn't give me any more options. I've tried searching for the drivers online, but so far, the only thing I've been able to find is a couple of driver scanning programs that 1, tell me it's up to date, and 2, won't let me do anything anyway unless I buy the registered version. Where can I find and install these drivers?

That's probably why you're receiving the error, there are no legacy ATI drivers for Vista. It's generally not a good idea to install drivers on the wrong OS.

Yeah I warned my roomate many times against getting Vista when we already had XP. *sigh* So there's no solution short of getting a new video card?

It's kinda slow, especially when starting up. There seem to me much more crashes than XP had. I absolutely hate the fact that they've screwed the backwards compatibility even more than before. I can play Dungeon Keeper 2 just fine (which seems strange since it won't run Fallout or Master of Orion 2) but when I install the latest patch for DK2, the game crashes immediately on startup, so I have to go patchless.

From what I hear Vista is great if you have all the latest and greatest hardware, otherwise you shouldn't even bother. Did you ever end up getting a new video card?

I've had this exact problem, but could not find the solution, so patchless works hmm? Thanks, this worked out in a funny way, trying to help someone else's PC problems and someone random gets an answer for another game completely. Ahh the miracle's/horror's of the internet. Anyway, sorry to get off topic, as you were.

No, money's pretty tight. It's going to be awhile.

@Zacirus
Glad I could help.
