Disappearing Characters

Ok, i've been playing for over a week, mostly exploring.
I had to restart the game because when i decided to go get Lucy West's quest i couldn't find her ... i waited around megaton in her house, at the saloon for days ... and she never showed up. Now I have a pile of scrap metal i was selling to Walter, went to megaton to the water processing plant, the saloon and ran around everwhere for hours ... no Walter. Just wanted to know if anyone else had this problem or whats going on?

They might "suicide". The pathfinding is so bad that they sometimes choose the wrong way and fall down and die. Might have happend, can happen to most of megatons people

i have heard of this bug, i think there is a console command to re-spawn characters - not the ideal way, a bug fix should be the solution, but, until that is done otherwise, research console command for re-spawning characters

Some just wander off and reappear at very very weird places. Like Paladin Hoss.. woke up one time in Megaton and found him aiming at my head with a missle launcher...
