Discoloration/Black Bars

Broletariat

First time out of the vault
Hello all,
I own fallout 1 & 2 on Steam and I get an odd discoloration plus the black bars on the side. anyone know how I can fix this? and if I can would it be compatible with the steam version of the game?

Maybe you are facing the same thing as I were a week ago or so, since I tried Fallout 2 on Windows 7 Ultimate x64

I solved it completely with the High Resolution patch from here, playing now at higher resolution with 64 bit colors.

The black bars stuff is a bug prevailing also these days. You must mean that ones that blocks the skill and inventory button, right? I don't know how to solve it, but the only thing you can do is to exit the game at all and re entering or use the shortcuts (S for skills and I for inventory).

Try installing the high resolution patch as suggested above (check NMA downloads).

If by odd discolouration you mean the infamous "rainbow colours" you could also try out "w7ddpatcher" it fixes that annoying problem many older games have when trying to run them on Vista or Windows 7.

I have used that little program to "patch" a lot of games including Fallout 1 and 2.

-Extract the files anywhere you like
-Run w7ddpatcher.exe.
-Click 'Patch', then browse to x:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\fallout
-Select the fallout.exe and click "open"
-Let the program work its magic
-Play Fallout

Get the GOG version, it has no colour problems and, is very cheap.

AFAIK it's exactly the same as the Steam version. (1.2)

The Highres Patch is using Sfall. ;) If you delete the ddraw.ini, it's not going to work anymore.

I'm not sure about it, Lexx. High-Res patch doesn't depend on any of sfall's function, you can run it on a clean Fallout install pretty well. Only thing affected by deleting ddraw.ini would be sfall itself.
