Do you play with any ammo mods? Which, and why?

First time out of the vault
Hi all,
I'm trying to decide on a mod to try. I'm looking for something that changes the stats on the different ammo types, because the FMJ/AP/JHP never seemed to do appropriate damages relative to each other.

I'm sure many people here played the game and thought "why does my armor-piercing ammo do crap damage compared to FMJ all the time?" Sifting through the item/weapon mod page, these are the only ones that looked promising in dealing with this problem:

Ammo patch: http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php?action=file&file_id=132
Cubik's Weapon&Ammo Mod: http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php?action=file&file_id=688
Item fix mod: http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php?action=file&file_id=157

Do you use any mods to fix the ammo stats? Do you like/dislike what 1.05 did for the ammo stats? Or do you think that the ammo works just fine without any mods?

The best (in my opinion) ammo mod is Cubik's Ammo Mod, because this improves and changes not only ammo stats, but stats of armor and critters armor and damage stats of weapon for best balance.

This version [Ammo Mod ver 1.0 beta, 19-06-2005] added to NMA download section is old.
There is on website http://cubik2k.w.interia.pl newest Ammo Mod 1.01c and update for ver 1.01c. See [download] section on this page and you will find. See [Info] section to read any information about this mod.

The mod Fallout 2 Item-Fix is looking quite nice and you can try play with this one too.

TeamX version of ammo patch is not good, is more poor then others.

If you want play with 1.05 Unofficial Patch first install the patch, and then install some ammo mod you want.

Or do you think that the ammo works just fine without any mods?
No, ammo will not works fine without any mod. This is bug in Fallout2 algorithm wich calculate the damage done by weapon with AP ammo to target with any armor.

See this topic, there is algorithm: http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10861&start=0

Your mod looks promising, Cubik. I only have one hesitation about it. It looked like in your most recent version, you added a burst mode to the 14mm pistol.

I haven't tried it yet, but I imagine this would create some balance issues early on in the game. I'm looking for something that only changes the modifiers on ammo and armor. Worst case, I suppose I can just edit the 14mm burst mode out, and use everything else.

If you don't mind me asking, why did you choose to add the burst mode to the 14mm?

Well, if you want only changes the modifiers on ammo and armor without the changes to 14 mm Pistol I wiil make Lite version of this mod and you can download it from my webpage for a few days. Lite version will be only changes to stats of armors, ammo and weapon. It will based on 1.01c version but I'm working on 1.01d which will be more better.

why did you choose to add the burst mode to the 14mm?
It's hard to answer to me because my English is not good, but I try.
I do this because 14mm Pistol is good weapon (with my mod) and I like this Pistol. But without burst mode it is too poor for stronger critters. I think that the burst mode would not create balance issues on in the game because ammo for this pistol is medium-hard to find.

did you implent burst modes to the shotgun and saw-off shotgun aswell. There would be a double shot burst mode on those but they never actually put it in the game

Well, thanks Oracle, I implement double shot burst mode for shotgun and sawed-off in the 1.02 version.

It will be two versions of this mod:
- Full version which contain more changes (scripts, new sfx and maybe new random encounters)
- and Lite version with only changes to stats on armours, weapons, ammo and critters armours stats.

Cubik2k,

I saw on your forum mention of a F2wedit 1.28 beta and F2wedit 1.29 alpha 1. I am unable to read Polish, so I am not sure of what all you are saying. I assume you are listing the bugs fixed in those versions. Is a new version available for download since 1.27 appears to be the only one that can be downloaded? Also, the 1.27 beta that you are hosting off you site is causing my Norton Antivirus to report a virus in the zip. The one off of NMA works just fine though.

ok, there are not bugs but abilities of new versions of F2wedit. Sorry, I'm not good in English but when I finish test of newest version I will upload it to NMA download wit translated readme.

The 1.28 alfa (and 1.29 alfa now) versions can automatically unpack necessary files from "master.dat" and/or "patch000.dat" and from "critter.dat". And there are will be some new changes and bugs fix.

This editor is free from any viruses (Avast 4.6 Home Edition with actual virus signature base) , but the executable file is packed with UPX with maximum compression, so some antivirus programms will report a virus, because heuristic scanning mode, especciallly Norton Antivirus.

If you wish I make unpacked version but it will be three times bigger (about 845 kBytes).

Here is link to newest F2wedit 1.29 alfa 2 http://cubik2k.w.interia.pl/download/F2wedit_1.29_alfa_2.zip
readme is in Polish, and some combo boxes, sorry, but unpack this to any folder and run executable. Editor require "master.dat" and "critter.dat" files in Fallout 2 game folder. That's all.

Cool, thanks!

Killap: do you think Cubik's mod will work with your patch?

Just wondering. It seems neat, if it works the way I think it does (ie by changing the armor characteristics depending on the ammunition, which is the correct way to implement armor piercing behavior, IMO).

Hey, thanks. :D

I'll give it a try. BTW, I am very impressed with your approach to fixing the ammo problem. I had thought of it before, but did nothing since I possess zero mod skills.

Luckily you do. :)

I do not test my Ammo mods with Killap's patch but if Killap do not assign any script to weapon, armor, ammo, drug and critter then Ammo Mod 1.01c Lite version will do work properly with his patch.
Here is link to download Ammo mod Lite version:

Cubik: After examining your ammo 1.02 test (your latest) mod I am curious as to why you are in love with the 14mm pistol? It does twice as much damage as the vanilla version (avg 17dmg vs avg 35 dmg) and now has a burst mode. Do you think this is unbalanced?

Also, will your latest work with killaps latest bug fix patch?

I'm curious as to how this affects game balance because although it pumps up armor to compensate for the increased damage from the weapons, I wonder if creatures like rad scorpions and such that have built in armor will be easy pickings.
Thanks
