Do you think the radio should always be american songs?

Look, Ma! Two Heads!
I mean I know most of the time the songs on the later Fallout games are american based but it would be cool to hear something like early syd barret on there.

Unlike some people, I quite enjoy most of the radio music. I think it'd be nice to keep the American Songbook tunes we've had.

I think the idea should be that the music available in the game should be similar to the type of music you would see played on local radio (not the super-popular stations that were centrally located in whatever city, since those were probably wiped out by the bombs, but the ones on the outskirts of town.)

So I don't think it necessarily needs to be "pure american" stuff, since if you had a Fallout game set in Texas you would probably have a bunch of Spanish language music that would survive, so there might be a station with a bunch of that stuff.

Fallout was never meant to be non-stop fifties Americana. Even that era had its counter-culture, namely the beatniks and communist punks. It would be an interesting change of pace to explore this underside of diverged American culture, so I'm not necessarily against the idea of a change in music.

Apparently, the counter-culture was huge in the United States by 2077. Rioters took over the cities towards the end, and you do have to fight off scores of communist revolutionaries in the Van Buren tech demo.

From what we've seen, there are hackers and a programming culture, an anti-war hippie movement, and some sort of leather-wearing punk group. Maybe it would be interesting to hear some Beatlemania-esque music from a beatnik channel, or heavy metal from a punk broadcast. So long as it is optional and a part of the role-playing experience, I'd be fine with it. Although, if the DJ is a pinko, I want to be able to find him and knock some sense into him with a Big Frigger power fist.

That would probably be the best way to implement foreign music. You could always have an ethnic community of pre-war immigrants like Patrick the Celt, or some sort of post-war religious institution that broadcasts Gregorian chants.

I always had the idea that Fallout was actually Cold War-esque in culture and that the fifties stuff was some sort of renaissance where they all take up fifties culture again just for the fun of it.

It would make sense for the government to support the cultural shift - seeing as the fifties were a fairly patriotic, relatively progressive time for the US, reminiscing about it would boost morale in times of war and drained resources. At least, that's my headcanon.

I'd love to see some Soviet marches, because damn are they great.

It'd be great to hear 'Roads', 'Let's Go' and 'My Army' playing on the radia.
