Does the patch really matter?

Probably. Below is a part of the patch readme, read it and decide for yourself:

------------

In addition to fixing many minor script bugs, this patch fixes the following problems:

- You can no longer get duplicate copies of the same NPC in your party.

- Armor now correctly adjusts your stats when being moved around in your inventory.

- Surviving exposure to radiation no longer raises your stats.

- The autorun program will no longer attempt to load while the game is playing.

This patch will not invalidate your saved games, however any saved game which has already been corrupted will not be fixed by installing this patch. For example, if you have a saved game which contains the duplicate-NPC bug, loading that saved game after installing this patch will not remove the duplicate NPC's from your party.

---------

That's it.

Patches are always good and make things better, unless they're from Microsoft, in which case they will just screw everything up even more.

But yeah, Fallout + patches = better Fallout.

lets not forget the apsense of a timelimit when taking on the Muties, i think anyway, i only ever played with the patch.

well I just beat the game for the first time, unpatched. and guess what the hell happened, well the VD is explaing everything he gets into a sentence about the master then the audio is cut off and it goes threw exlaing all the towns in slience. so that really sucks, I still see the overseer and the game ends but i wanna know wtf happened to the towns.

This is a sound issue:

Disable hardware acceleration for your soundcard through dxdiag
and everything will play fine!

... oh and hello to the forums!

The mutation effect of radiation is reason enough to play upatched for me.

Save it though, because while most of the time it makes you grossly superior, there is that occasional time when it drops all your stats to below 3.
