does the Slayer really walk the earth?

First time out of the vault
After finally reaching level 24 with my Unarmed char, I picked Slayer (certainly). But after the first two fights (getting back to Arroyo with the G.E.C.K., having random encounters) I have to tell you that I’m not _that_ amazed by it… The reason is:

W/o Slayer: you have to hit an enemy in the eyes with an aimed punch costing 3AP, resulting plenty of times in instant death (not depending on the actual damage), blindness or a high quality critical strike dealing 80+ damage because of the sensitive location (quite often also resulting in death). (btw I’m using Mega Power Fist, certainly)

With Slayer: you hit an enemy w/o aiming (which makes the game a bit grayer I think) for 2AP, resulting always in a critical hit, BUT: as this isn’t aimed at any sensitive location, it often ends up in a ‘normal’ critical (most of the time at the chest I suppose) dealing 40-50 damage and nothing more… Less instant kills, less ‘high quality’ criticals, and significantly less blinded (and therefore harmless) people. Well I guess you can kill them in 2-3 hits, but it’s not that impressive as it can be (sometimes, not always though) with aimed hits and is probably less impressive than I expected…

I can see as well that even a 3-hit kill costs 6AP, which is the equivalent of a 2-hit kill with aimed hits… I consider it as a kind of gamble, you either kill someone one-hit aimed (3AP) or fail to do so (6AP), or take the reliable, not aimed way of two-three hit kill (usually 4AP). So here I don’t state that Slayer isn’t good or anything, I just say that after all it’s not _that_ big improvement as I expected, at least based on my very first experiences.

Any experiences / comments on this?

Cheers

Yeah, I always prefer a punch in the eye, too....whenever I take the perk or not. But it does improve your normal attack, right?

The perk gives you more convinience in choosing different strageties, and there are few other perks more useful than it, especially when you are on LV 24......

I don't think hitting someone in the eye always results in a critical without Slayer, even if you have LK 10 and Finesse (adds 60% or something to the chance, I think). You could keep aiming for the eyes and simply see Slayer as the perk that pushes that 70-80% crit chance up to 100%, which is, well, something.

If you have 10 AP's and Bonus HtH Attacks (which I believe you would if you were playing HtH character) you'd have 3 aimed attacks w/o Slayer and some 80% chance of a critical weighted against 100% crit chance 5 unarmed attacks with Slayer. Also, unaimed attacks can't cripple, but may instant-kill or stun as well (granted , a tad less often)

However, note one thing. If you don't have Slayer, you still have to make a Luck roll to get a crit no matter what, but with Slayer, you can just ignore that altogether, so it may be useful to low LK characters.

Also, just because you have it doesn't mean you can't aim, does it, it just gives you the certainty.

Cheers mates, after playing a bit more I can agree to Per, I rather consider Slayer as a deadly addition to the eye-aimed hits, with this perk the result of such a hit is almost certain... Without aiming I still get those 40Hp-hits, so I don't bother with those unless I only have 2APs or my opponent is dying. :P And if I want to have fun or see 2 (or more) opponents in a row, I just pull out the Bozar with an evil, evil smile...

The only problem is that I had to face that dreaded "skilldex button going black" bug, which 1, ruined my joy in the game and 2, would force me to replay a few hours, fervently hoping that in won't occur again... :( So I just put on hold FO2 for a bit, gathering together the "I need to play FO2" feeling a bit until I reach the level where I can face such vile and unfair challanges... 8)

Why replay? You can still use the Skills...
Just save, exit and reload... or doesn't that work?

"Oh no! An insignificant spot of dark matter on my screen, I'm incapable of continuation!"

Actually, Gus, Per points out in his guide that this is often a sign of the more deadly Too ManyItems bug impeding...

Morpoggel: this bug strangely corrupts ALL savegames (even those that you haven't even touched for weeks, even the level1 savegame in Arroyo, etc.), so it won't heal. The skills can be used through keys, but (see next part):

Gus: Silencer is right, I've heard that this is the first sign of that damn bug, therefore I don't want to continue a game which might goes corrupt after spending a few more hours with it... Don't judge too quickly, the fact that I don't have that many posts as you do should not consequently mean that I'm a dumb wihout any sense to logical thinking...

BTW I've just read over Per's guide (awesome work mate! :ok: ) again concerning this bug, and it makes a connection between this "black skilldex" bug and the Military Base Holodisks (which I've read all through of course  ) right before going to SF (where the bug occurred), so I think I see what should I do to prevent this...
