I've been playing FO3 since it came out, and I just beat it last night after about 56 hours of play time. After reading these forums for a few days I don't really want to waste the time defending my opinion, but I think that this is a pretty good game overall. Of course it isn't as good as the originals but it has its high points.

Anywho, matters of subjective taste aside, I just wanted to point out a couple of glaring omissions that actually do get my G.O.A.T.

Where the hell is my Pancor Jackhammer? The combat shotgun is ok, but it doesn't even fire bursts! One of my favorite things about the originals was their buffet of death style variety of unique and kick ass weapons, out of which my favorite morsels were the Pancor and the Gauss weapons. I really liked FO3, but I was always hoping to find some diadem of more advanced weaponry... I just want my automatic shotgun for the love of god! And no, the Fat Man doesn't make up for this. Oh well.

    At least they had [spoiler:a257360830]Harold[/spoiler:a257360830]

I guess someone at BS really likes the PPSh maybe. but in that case they should have replaced the SMG with it rather than the combat shotgun. it doesn't make any sense from an engineering standpoint for a PPSh to be a shotgun and the SMG looks dumb anyway (mostly because it's one handed and has no recoil). I hope that making better looking guns is going to be a major area for modders.

It's really obvious that nobody on the dev team played either fallout all the way through. They probably played for a couple hours then realized that reviewers would do the same with their product- so they show you all the cool stuff right off the bat then leave you wandering through boring metro stations copy pasted all over the map to add to they "play hours" rating. Obviously all the cool stuff from the originals got left out, because they never interacted with it.

No, I killed him for an extra 5% Damage resistance...

I guess it is presented in a very depressing manner though. Especially if you're one of the people who would link it allegorically to the franchise.

They probably did play the first two games all the way through. I just get the feeling they wanted to present the basics of a new concept. I think Fallot 3 is basically a foundation of a new beginning for the series. Rather then a full rebirth. From what they developed I figure they will develop there own direction and style at this point :D

I guess thats dependent on who you ask
Stylistically? Maybe just barely. In name, for sure. I do think eventually that it will be considered the 3rd in the series if the 4th improves upon the 3rd. Does that concept make sense? :)

I am assuming that you have not played FO3, and don't intend to. I don't know if what you're saying is totally fair. Sure, they changed it a lot, but considering the limitations of what they were trying to do, I don't think they really had a choice. Sure, we all wanted a Fallout 3 that picked right up from Fallout 2 the minute we finished playing that game, but Interplay kind of spoiled their chance. In my opinion, it's better to see the franchise continue in the hands of another company than to see it fade away. And, in my opinion, FO3 could have been a lot worse. Like I said, I've put almost 60 hours into it so far and I still have only explored about two thirds of the map, maybe less. From what I've gathered, this was made by people who were really trying to make a quality game that does justice to its predecessors. There are points where you can tell they don't get what made the first two games so great, but all in all I think that it translates intact. I find myself playing pretty much the same way I would have played Fallout 1, even with the real time combat and V.A.T.S. To me, it seems like they did their best in spite of the pitfalls that are unavoidable in this kind of endeavor. Lore and referrences from the originals abound, but they could have moved the story forward a little more instead of just giving a recap of what happened on the west coast. Anyway... just imagine if someone like EA had picked up the title...

That being said, and though I feel that the spirit and general feel of Fallout are preserved in FO3, here is a list of things that I really missed in addition to what I mentioned earlier:

First, and most disappointingly, there don't seem to be any huge "dungeon" areas that require as much puzzle solving as say The Glow or the military base in FO2 where you can create the Robobrain. Sure, there are plenty of Vaults and other dungeons (and I highly recommend hacking every damn terminal in the game if you want the full flavor of the fallout "fluff") but there are none that present too great a challenge or contain too great a reward. Killing Enclave patrols for their power armor and energy weapons seems like the best way to get those high tech goodies.

Second, while the game is gory and I enjoy blowing people's legs off especially, I wish that they had been a little more true to the original death scenes. There's nothing like bursting into an opponent and blowing their torso into bits, or getting a critical to the eyes and blowing a hole through the torso (which was silly, but it looked cool). Two exceptions to this are the laser rifle and the plasma rifle, which reward critical strikes with some death animations which at times can be quite spectacular.

Third, there is a complete lack of inter-location politics like there was in FO2. It was fun to play the diplomat, and influence the growth of the wasteland for better or worse as it suited your needs.

Yeah, i agree, the ppSH looking shotgun was pretty lame. But i do not see how you can complain about the current smg model because it resembles the original original smg model, which was also fired with one hand. In a game with plasma weapons and power armor, it's not far fetched to conceive a sub machine gun with compensators build in to eliminate recoil...

That's another thing that I have to give Bethesda some props for, for the weapons they DID put in the game, they obviously took a lot of time in design to make sure they looked like they would actually work. You can literally look at the laser rifle and name off the parts if you want to. And yes, the SMG looks almost exactly like it did in the originals, and isn't that thing jerry rigged to the back of it some kind of compensator like you were saying?

no gauss weaponry or other hi-end stuff.. Oh well. It's both good and bad. Good because it's closer to Fallout 1, where plasma rifle was the sex. Bad because it's cool to find something powerful and spectacular deep in the game that isn't called energy weapon.

What puzzles me more is that Enclave Armor (which is Advanced Power Armor by canon) has worse stats than t-51b Power Armor. Come on. This is ridiculous.

I know Adv. Power Armor isn't very fallout1-correct, but if they decided to include it, why not to make it a kickass armor available for the player as a reward for some difficult quest.

There is a bunch of info you can pick up in the Museum of Tech. that explains the function of the laser weapons and some other devices based on the research done by Tessler and his compatriots back in the day.

Yeah I'd agree that Bethesda did map out weapons as they'd be used if the technology was evident in day to day life. I really enjoy the look of reloading the plasma and laser weapons. With the cells and such, looks cool. Anywho...

Whats wrong with the combat shotty? Looks fine to me, damage is decent... I dont get it.

There are some decent power armors though which you can find...am I wrong?

Yeah but the advanced power armor seems sucky, judging by stats on fallout wikia.

The only special armor I've found is the Prototype Medic Power Armor... which has no +Str or -Agi but has a higher DR, talks to you and feeds you Med-X. I think the Advanced Power Armor also has a higher DR than standard power armor, and the stats are kind of a trade off. -2 Agility almost isn't worth the +2 strength in my opinion.

You could, if you wanted go strictly power armor, add a few more points into your agility with the alloted perk to cancel out the -2 agility, but then you're wasting decent perk points... yeah its a bit of an issue. The extra DR is nice though... in my opinion. The Med X issue with the Medic armor is a hassle however...

Umm I believe there is another power armor though, its in the wiki...err I'll check.

strictly speaking, the Citykiller shotty would've been a better choice.

the Jackhammer is a real life weapon, and doesn't really fit the intended setting.

(yes, i know that even FO1 had a few real weapons)
