Some choice quotes from the article:

"Video game giant Electronic Arts (EA) says it wants to become the biggest entertainment firm in the world."

"We will be able to bring more people into gaming because games will be more emotional."
{More emotional? More emotional because your games become more and more generic crap?}

"Mr Florin predicted that the next round of games console would give developers enough power to create real emotion. "
{Real emotion? As opposed to fake emotion? And why the next round of game consoles? Game consoles are always less powerful than normal PCs, because the technoogy used to create Games Consoles is already available on PCs}

"Our goal is to bring games to the masses which bring out emotions."
{Then you must be wondering why you're failing so miserably at that}

"People will want to play video games if their heroes like Robbie Williams or Christina Aguilera are in them."
{Pukes}

"Mr Florin predicted that the next round of games console would give developers enough power to create real emotion. "

Bullshit. Japanese developers have been packing their projects with plenty of soul and emotion for years now on current generation consoles.

Regardless of how you feel about the games themselves, I doubt anybody can look at something like Metal Gear Solid 3 and say that it lacks "emotion," drama, cinematic appeal, whatever other bullshit buzzwords these guys come up with.

Resident Evil has been making players feel like they're playing through a horror movie for years, whereas the last time I can remember a zombie title worth playing on the PC was the They Hunger mod for Half-Life.

There are also plenty of non-Japanese titles that are packed with creativity and originality, such as the Oddworld games.

One can even go back as far as Earthworm Jim to find "games with emotion" on consoles.

So bite my ass, Gerhard Florin.

"Our goal is to bring games to the masses which bring out emotions."

They have already succeeded at that. The emotions you feel when you just realized you paid $50 for a worthless drink coaster. Hatred, Anger, Sadness etc

Or the part where you realise that their shitty programmers managed to fuck up the codepath for regulating the speed so badly the game won't ever run properly on your laptop.

And you forgot about Planescape: Torment, Bradylama. Good graphics won't do jack shit for a game's emotional involvement without a gripping story, characters or environment.

I'm gonna assume you meant me. But you're right, Planescape would be a good example, assuming I wasn't focusing on console titles, which he mentioned specifically.

This is reminding me of those damn Tomigachi things teenage girls were obsessed with a couple of years ago. They had REAL emotions and you had to take care of them and everyone had one! Yes, I want games with "emotion" but not if it's just crap ripped off from a ten-cent romance novel. The emotion must be part of the story, not the focus of it. - Colt

Tomigachis didn't really have emotions, so much as needs that gave nothing back to the owner upon fulfillment.

I remember the Tomigachi craze back in Middle School, and how I really wanted one. Then when I actually saw one, I couldn't understand why people would by that crap.

(MGS3 is awesome though ;( )

Oddly enough, I've actually heard nothing about MGS3. Is it even out yet? I assume so since you seem to like it so much... The Metal Gear games have always been favorites of mine; I have the original NES cartriges for the first and second games somewhere.

About the only thing I ever wanted to do with a Tomigachi was smash it because it kept giong off when my sister would ignore it.

Edit: Thought I'd add this in so no one kills me over MGS3... I don't have the money to have subscriptions to gaming magazines or anything and I don't know of any really good gaming sites to check for news on this stuff that isn't just endless verbal wankery for the kiddies so that's why I haven't heard anything about it. :x - Colt

I remember having a Tamagotchi when I was 8. It went like this:
"I've got a Tamagotchi! Weee. Oh, sure it's not a "Tamagotchi" Tamagotchi, but would you ever pay $100 of you could pay $10?"

"This is fun. I get to feed it and stuff."
*2 days pass*
"Damn that sucked."

Oh, and yes, I meant you Brady.

The first game kicked my 8 year-old ass like nobody's business. :( Fond memories of the cardboard box, though.

Since you haven't heard anything about 3, then the first thing you should know is that reactions to it have been a mixed bag. I liked the other two Solid games, myself, and I liked Snake Eater more than those.

I'd seriously suggest renting it, though, as it doesn't seem to be for everybody.

Also, to remain somewhat on-topic, add Suikoden 2 to the list of Console Titles with soul. If a game can feature 108 characters which you develop a fondness for (good and bad), then somebody's done something right.

Well, I continued the thread of MGS because I've always liked them and actually felt something when I was running through the game. It had a feel to it that I can't quite describe. Almost noir. - Colt
