Editing tool of choice (GIMP)

Water Chip? Been There, Done That
My photoshop cs4 trial version is nearing it's end, and i'm not buying it. But i need an editing tool that it's capable of smart selections, working with layers, batch import/export and conversions, and can load FO2's palette. So i'm thinking GIMP, but i've heard that it's got a very unfriendly interface...and well, that's about it, haven't heard anything else... :?

Any GIMP users and/or detractors out there that can shed some light on this?

Thanks. :)

I have never used Photoshop and am not an advanced user of such tools, but I have used Gimp to chop photos, pictures, make comics etc; I find it to be a very handy tool, especially since it is free.

Again; I am not an advanced user so I cannot comment on specifics, but it works like a charm for me.

Yes, the interface of GIMP sucks. It sucks really bad. Imagine something bad and then double it twice. This is how bad the GIMP interface is.

But anyway, since Version 2.6 they started fixing it up a bit. Now it is a bit more userfriendly but still... you will need your time until you can really use it. I just can say, try it at least and then try easy stuff first. I am using GIMP every now and then for smaller things and I slowly becomes better and better with it. Still, I can't do the big things with this program like in Photoshop, but it should be possible... maybe I should read some more tutorials or just test around one more year. Someday, I will get it too... heh.

From Photoshop to GIMP it is nearly the same like from 3D modeling programm XY to Blender. Imo.

Gimp is a good tool but you heard right - not the friendliest interface.

I use it in combination with Image Analyzer which is friendlier but has less features (some that Gimp lacks though). You can get it here - also free: http://meesoft.logicnet.dk/

Paint.NET is good too. But it also lacks a lot good features. Still, it's easier to use than GIMP.

I created this with Paint.NET, so it is possible (and pretty easy) to create Fallout color-friendly art with it.

Thanks for your suggestions, i think i'll maybe give Paint.NET a try along with GIMP...

What about IrfanView is it any good?

IrfanView is an image viewer (a pretty good one at that, I've been using it for years), not an editor. It does have some editing capabilities, but it's all very rudimentary.

Gimpshop is supposed to have a photoshop-like interface. Maybe try that.

I'll look into that when I get home... I like GIMP but it takes a lot of getting used to, still it covers all my needs, I'm a pretty basic user who rarely even bothers with layers.

Yes. Compared to Photoshop, Gimp is to graphic editing what a wooden, wheeled toy is to driving a real car.

Depends what you want to do with it... but I definitely wouldn't reccomend Gimp if you plan to use graphic editing tools as a part of a larger project.

So what you are saying is that compared to Photoshop it is quite ... eeeh ... gimped?

Sorry. I just had to.
