Encounters of the wierd degree...

Oddball_E8

First time out of the vault
ok, so i know we all have our complaints about FO3, but most of us still play it like the little fallout lapdogs we are...

so what kind of wierd happenings have you had in the wastes?

my best one so far is something that happened to me about 2 hours ago...
i was fallowing a group of 3 brotherhood outcasts around (since i was level 4 i thought they could protect me hehe) behind the mountain where vault 101 is (on the other side from megaton) and they had just dispatched a handyman military robot when all of a sudden i hear what sounds like a jetfighter and then BOOM! an explosion right infront of me in the air...

i follow the smoke trail over the mountaintop and realise that somewhere down there, someone must have missed with a missilelauncher and the shot went over the mountain and exploded right above our heads!

there is no way anyone could have been shooting at us since they would have hit the mountain instead (besides the fact they couldnt have seen us) and i have the creature/enemy spawn distance to maximum so people spawn almost outside my visual range...

that was just so awsome!

ps. i then proceeded to follow the outcasts around until they started dying and then i picked up their armor and weapons hehe...
i know i cant use the powerarmor but at least when i can i will have a fully repaired set of outcast armor at home hehe... as soon as i schlep my load back to megaton... very slowly... im "slightly" overloaded hehehe

I kind of like those Outcast fellas, actually. I had a Deathclaw charging at me, and I was trying to reload my rifle, when all of a sudden, I hear a minigun spin up and cut the Deathclaw in half. Look around to see, and it's a pair of Outcasts walking by. I could have saluted those chaps right then.

A weird occurance in the waste for me is me being in outcast armor and still being called by the brotherhood a lapdog. A really weird thing and i'm not just trying to point out a mistake but is it just me or does it seem like you can be randomly walking around the wastes and stuff just starts to explode, it's like i'm in Basara in 04 or something. It does add to a freightening atmosphere that there is no safe place and there are enemies everywhere but I'm just not sure whats going on at times since I am unable to find the source of the explosions at times.

actually... the stuff exploding in the distance that you hear all the time is actually the eyebots that keep getting killed (and self-exploding at death) by animals

Actually, I think that's a random even where An alien ship gets blown up and ends up dumping a few alien power cells that you can pick up.

I think the alien spaceship along with its power cells and alien blaster is pretty much a fixed location.

The Alien Crash Site is fixed, but alien power cells falling from the sky is a random encounter.

Some dude walked up to me babbling about me being The One or something and then died. That was weird. I was somewhere in the north-northwest area of the map and I'm guessing he referred to some quest, but I never bothered to look up what he was talking about.

The first weird encounter was when I left the Vault at the beginning of the game. Instead of taking my route straight to Megaton I walked south towards the city where I ran onto some raiders with one carrying a big mofa- rockeet-launcha. "No sweat", I said to myself. I'll just hide behind the corner and when he nears I'll get to close quarters so he wouldn't dare to use his explosive device. How wrong was I when I started mauling him with my baseball bat. He just unloaded on me one rocket and despite standing next to me he didn't feel a thing while my character flew straight towards the orbit. Ok, let's take on another tactics. I'll keep as far as possible and have the bastard run outta missiles...
After 10 minutes I resigned. Seems he had one of those handy 100-meter long missiles ammo belt with him.

The other day I've been wandering aimlessly through the wasteland and encountered a raiders base with a pen that contained Behemoth. I wasted all of the villains and started my experiments on the abomination. Launched two mighty portable atomic bombs and the second one got him into the stratosphere where he stood for a minute or two just to drop back and obediently die. Immershun.

All NPCs have infinite ammo until death. Once you KILL (or pickpocket) the NPC, the game rolls the loot table to generate a random amount of ammo. Hows that for immersion killer?

This is a wasteland, ain't it? The resources are scarce. I don't see why am I the only one that should run out of ammo and all the NPCs can have unlimited amount of it. I mean come on! Doesn't it seem a bit irrational that a wimpy female raider is shooting missiles endlessly? I could buy it if she was shooting a semi automatic pistol but a big heavy rocket launcher? Considering that a rocket would weight 3 or 4 kg it's impossible.
I remember the NPCs in the canon ran out of ammo quite fast, especially those with very heavy or auto weapons, and that forced them to fight melee.

Rockets weigh nothing, just like any other ammo in O:W ED.
I'm aware that ammo weights nothing in FO3 (which is another one of Bethesda's ridiculous ideas). What I'm saying is that it's a common fact that missiles are heavy and it's just plain stupid that someone can carry an unlimited amount of them. Ah, never mind.

What? Maddening! No wonder those Chinese ghouls never seemed to run out of ammo.

Which reminds me...having cleared out a food processing plant full of Ghoulified ChiComs, I'm left with a few questions:

1. It's been 200 years since the war. Are they really still holding a grudge? Is their propaganda radio station really necessary? Especially since they're broadcasting to Arlington National Cemetary and pretty much nowhere else.

2. Why on earth would they go to the trouble to import Chinese weapons, uniforms, etc. into the United States back in 2077 when they could have gotten their hands on domestic weaponry just as easily and without risking detection. Why did they feel a need to wear Chinese uniforms? Were they that worried about being shot as spies if they were caught?[/i]
