Etrian Odyssey

I highly recommend anybody that loved gaming in the old days that required you map things out with graph paper, like Wizardry, Bard's Tale and Might and Magic to pick up Etrian Odyssey for the Nintendo DS.

A friend of mine has been trying to talk me into getting a DS for a couple years now and I finally caved in to him and bought one. This game got mostly mediocre, and even some poor, reviews and most of the complaints about it were that it was too hard, too unforgiving and the mapping too tedious.

But its as close as you can get to those old games from a commercial project and I'm loving it. You are actually required to map out the game yourself, with the stylus. The bottom screen is the map, and if you don't do it correctly you can really screw yourself. You can only save in town, or in a few rare other points and you only have one savegame.

Its really just a dungeon crawl, like the early Wizardry's. Not a lot of story, but if you liked those old games before automaps, this is a great homage.
