Anybody else here a fan of the Paradox grand strategy games "Europa Universalis?"

I've been playing since EUI, and have loved each incarnation.

Also, I've been part of the EU community (at the Paradox forums) and it's quite nice. Many of the developers post there, and actually implement suggestions from fans into the game (like BI used to).

Love the company, and their games are top notch.

You should try EUIII with MM (Magna Mundi), it gives much needed complexity and flavor making it one of the most worthwhile titles....but yea Crusader Kings, Victoria, Hearts of Iron I&II, these are all fantastic games that I tirelessly play, so I guess that makes me a fan.

I used to be an absolute bloody Paradox junkie.

I don't like the way they are going, though. They're turning into a little Swedish Bethesda: they keep on dumbing down their games (EU2 -> EU3 is case in point), they release broken games (well, they always kinda did that - but the new part is that nowadays, they offer content that was missing from the original game in the first place as 'expansion packs', which is just moneygrabbing to me), they tend to go hype up their games (just look at how they are tackling HOI3, for example. "10000 provinces! OMG!" - like the province count is what's important to the fans. They should fix their friggin' stupid AI.), and they respect their fanbase less and less.

I bought EU3: Rome, and I regret it greatly. I've bought EU3, EU3: NA and EU3: NI - but it's the last time I'm going to do that, because you only got an enjoyeable game after both of these 'expansion packs (compared to what Päradox USED to do for their fans, they're just glorified patches), and after spending about 100 euros on it.

I'm not going to buy HOI3. I don't trust Paradox anymore.

I agree that Paradox games are great games, and I also agree that the company is moving somewhat in the wrong direction.

I only have EU3 (with NA and IN) and I think it's a great game; however I hate how the AI can be so unreasonable sometimes.

In my current IN game with Novogrod I declared war on Norway who were allied with Denmark. I defeated their major armies, took 7 provinces and got a 50+% warscore, so I decided to try and make peace. First I asked for 6 provinces worth 48% (all Finnish provinces are worth only 8%) and was rejected, fine so I asked for 5, then 4 then just 2 worth 16% and was STILL denied.

Norway and Denmark could not have had more than 10k troops left and I had 30k in their provinces, I mean what the hell.
In the end, for all my effort, I got 1 province and 50 bucks. If you make a peace offer below the warscore the AI should be forced to accept it.

And it only gets worse as the game progresses and the blobbing starts. There's just no point on even declaring war on one of those, even if you go all out and have a 50 year war with nothing but a string of victories, in the end you're lucky to get a province or 3 out of it.
I dont know how they can fix that, a start would be that when a country gets more provinces the individual provinces start becoming worth less when negotiating peace.
So a if a province is part of a 4 province nation that province could be worth 30% but when that same province is part of a 40 province nation that province should only be worth less, maybe only 5%.

You have to learn to manipulate the victory demands system. First off, if they have a 10k army left, they're not going to give up. Eradicate their army completely. Second, blockade their ports with your navy. That increases their war fatigue and raises the war score. Third, when dealing with big blobs, it's more efficient to get them to release nations than it is to demand territory straight up.

Still, it usually takes two or three wars to completely annex a country. More if it's a big one.

I never play with superpowers(Novgorod,Brandenburg,Ottoman Empire,Timurids),with tax collectors and some time you can increase your income to 500 a year, no challenge. But try playing with Adal or even Serbia in 1453 now that's quick, playing with Adal i can take on Ethiopia but get DoW by Mamelukes, not to mention Serbia, speed run lasting 5-10 minutes tops, before Ottomans kick my ass in two very brief wars(playing on Very Hard high aggressive)
