Expanding hand to hand combat?

I recall having conversations with a friend where we were on the subject of martial arts and hand to hand combat. He argued that Fallout hand to hand was not realistic as it did not even include rudimentary grappling techniques. Would this be possible to implement in the next Fallout?

Since Fallout is a turn based game, to devise a system for grappling attacks would be implausible. How can you bearhug a guy to death before your turn ends? Fallout 2 did have different fighting forms as your character gained levels (for instance, the simple PUNCH being converted to a JAB). Also, remember that there are only two weapon slots available. So the two weapon slots, punch and kick, would have to be replaced in order for different attacks using other body parts, i.e. headbutt.

To expand upon this, the type of combat popular in the time-frame from which Fallout takes its roots is pugilism. Boxing, with some kicks, but no kicks too fancy. Basically, just think of Clint Eastwood instead of Jackie Chan or Upchuck Norris.

This kind of combat is far better for TB than grappling or anything else, which is another point where the universe design meshes in nicely with the combat system.

Okay, good point. Being slightly off topic is their any turn based game set on squad level OR FO-like turn based game that has grappling in their combat system?

You're gunna hate me for saying this but, Final Fantasy Tactics had some move for the monk that let you do a bearhug or something. But the dumb thing about that is that the attack is essentially a one-hit-K.O.

Btw, don't you think Eidos should change the title for the Final Fantasy games? Just when does the adjective "Final" ever apply to this twelve sequel game?

Hmmmmm

Did you ever wonder why Squaresoft hadn't made any official sequels to their Final Fantasy games? None of the games took place after the original one. None of them took place after the second and third ones we got for the super nintendo. They aren't really sequels.

So you could take it (this is stretching it, I know, but for the sake of "food for thought") that this is the final episode for each and every chapter of the series.

For example, all of the games use some form of magic. In the original final fantasy you could purchase magic. Yet in another version you gained it by picking up magicite. Another version it was called materia. Although the majority of these games take place (technically) on the same planet, they are completely different stories.

So perhaps each of these stories (chapters, or if you prefer sequels) is actually the last. Thus...final fantasy. We'll never see a sequel to that world again.

I don't know, thats how I tried to think of it. I guess you could also think of it as a hit franchise. They probably thought it sounded good way back in the 8-bit days, and when people demanded a sequel what were they going to call it? Exactly the name of the franchise. Final Fantasy 2.

I don't think their stories are as good as they used to be by a long shot. You know what I think was great? Final Fantasy 3 using the Returners. Man, those were my favorite NPCs. They had those goggles over their heads and they just looked great. They had their own sort of glorious personality to them, a bit like the rebels in Star Wars. It just brought really great memories. Yet, that wasn't the real story. They ruined it with all the goofy Esper crap. What it should have been was just an all out war story.

Then you had Final Fantasy 7 which, once more, brought back the whole rebellion thing. This time they were against Shinra. Man, that was great, having people firing at us and trying to escape from getting blown up and some guy that was gutting everyone alive, it was awesome. Nothing was scarier than seeing all that blood on the floor and when Sephiroth had broke in. Yet once more, all of that BS about Sephiroth and Jenovah and whatever just got way out of hand. It was no longer about war.

Final Fantasy 8 had the same great premises. You start out in a military academy! You could move up in rank and your rank would determine how much money you got. What a wonderful idea! And yet, what happens? It talks about an evil sorceress and blah blah blah, it got stupid again.

Fallout Tactics was a great, I thought. That was until I saw that you couldn't create any new guys midway through the game. You could, but how is your character going to level up when the monsters that should be lower levels (when you backtrack) are all extremely high and will kill him with one blow. Crappy.

I never played the other Final Fantasy games and I don't plan to. The stories just got worse and worse, the characters got cheaper and cheaper, and they just didn't seem serious enough to me. I hung up my video game rpg gloves long ago.

Long live Fallout! Or...maybe not? =/
