explosives

im sorry for posting this but i cant seem to places explosives in fallout 1 or 2
do they need to be placed in only certain areas or can they be dropped anywhere and how so
i ask because i need to get through the welded door in the glow first level
can explosives help me here?

And what melded door in the glow? If you mean the elevator, no you can't blow it up.
