F2: Black screen when entering "Primitive Tribe"

First time out of the vault
Hallo there!

I noticed a strange bug: Whenever I enter the primitive tribe in order to solve Sulik's quest the whole map turns into black. I can still wander around but without an exit.

What can I do? Did anyone else encounter this bug?

(I got the Restoration Project installed)

Thanks for any help! ;)

What version of the RP, what OS, and what version of F2 (i.e. GOG, etc)?
"RP 2.1.2b Windows installer, Windows 7, english version", apparently (it's on the bug Wiki).

kicker04, your save game link on rapid share don't work, check your permission settings.
Incidentally I suspect your primitive tribe problem is also permission related.
Please check your DATA\Proto\Critters folder and check that it contains 100 something .pro files and 1 critter.lst file.
Also check DATA\Proto\Items for over 100 .pro files and an items.lst file.
If they are not write protected they will get deleted when you start your game, which can lead to the problems you are having.
If those files are missing, you will have to reinstall your game and then make sure they are set to read only. Keep your saves as there should be nothing wrong with them.

It's in the wiki, cause I put it in there ;)

Thats strange: The critters AND the items folder contain each only one file (critters.lst and items.lst). Ok, I try to get them back with a reinstall. Didn't know I have to change permissions of those folders.
How comes I'm the only one with this problem?

(I fixed the rapidshare permission thingy but it may be obsolete anyway)

I let you know if your solution worked. I would never have guessed...

edit: I just copy the file from RP over? I don't actually have to install the game again.

Ahhh: I copied the files from RP 2.1.2b critters and items folder and made those two folders read-only. Now there is a map!

Thanks for the hint (also I don't quite understand the reason)! ;) And thanks for the RP too, it's great work. Gonna try the new beta soon.

You are not, though it's rare for windows systems. They are set to read only from the beginning, but must have somehow lost it.
Don't ask me how. Windows and/or it's users do strange things at times. ;)
Glad it's working now.

What is it that causes these files to be deleted in the first place? Is there code somewhere I could take a look at to see if I could patch things up?

That's an interesting question. Is the original F2 revolting against new content?

It's just how the engine manages it's files. It uses those proto folders for temp files, which is why it wants to clear them when no longer in use.

Basically most of what is in the data folders where never meant to be installed there, they belong in master and critter dat, and if something needed patching it would go to patch000.dat.

It's just more practical and convenient for modders to use the data folders instead of a patch file.

Two slightly related questions:
does the installer set those files to read only by itself, or should I do it manually? (I'm using the open beta for 2.2 right now)
Does any of you know what the option "override filesystem" of sfall does? I wonder if it would be useful for this kind of problem.

For me the installer didn't do the trick, I had to do so manually ;)
