Fallout 1 & 2: No music. Tried everything to fix it...

Radar E 33

First time out of the vault
Hi. You're probably thinking "oh great, another noob thread". Well, hopefully this isn't the case. I did a search, and did not find anyone having as severe a problem with getting music to work with Fallout 1 and 2.

I've tried everything to get music to play in the game. I've tried fixing fallout 1 & 2's .cfg file (namely the music paths). No dice. I've tried updating my video and sound card drivers. No dice. I've run dxdiag tests and sent them to interplay upon request. Haven't heard back from them. I've disabled sound acceleration to "none". That fixed the game over and ending videos, but i still have no music.

Can anyone provide assistance? Thank you.

Computer specs:

HP pavilion a1532n w/ custom work (power supply, graphics card)

-Windows XP SP3 (2005 Media center edition OS)
-2 Gigs RAM
-Nvidia GTS 250 1 Gig video card
-Pentium D 2.8 ghz processor
-Realtek High Definition Audio
DirectX ver. 9.0c
-Up-to-date video and audio drivers
-Fallout 1 and 2 from Fallout Trilogy collection disk
-Up to date Fallout 1 and 2 patches (music did not work with 1.02 for either game and does not work with the unofficial patches).
-Compatibility Mode used with Fallout 1 and 2; still no music.
-Re-installing has not worked either.

How are you installing the game? If you are doing a humongous install, then the .cfg needs to point to the sound\music directory with the sound (.acm) files. Are the files actually there? If you are doing another install, then the .cfg needs to point to the sound\music directory of the CD. Are they actually there on the CD? I know, basic stuff, but you didn't make it clear that you checked this.

Yea, i checked it. The file are there and everything. The folders are named DATA/SOUND/MUSIC. The music wasn't working before i changed the music path in the .cfg file to C:... DATA/SOUND/MUSIC, as the path was Data/Sound/Music. They still are not working.

My .cfg files (music paths are the same, expect for the fallout 1 and 2 folders obviously)

[sound]
cache_size=448
device=-1
dma=-1
initialize=1
irq=-1
master_volume=22281
music=1
music_path1=C:\Program Files\Interplay\Fallout Collection\Fallout2\DATA\SOUND\MUSIC\
music_path2=C:\Program Files\Interplay\Fallout Collection\Fallout2\DATA\SOUND\MUSIC\
music_volume=22281
port=-1
sndfx_volume=22281
sounds=1
speech=1
speech_volume=22281

As for install, the Fallout trilogy disk only has one install option (if i remember correctly), and that is to install the game(s); no humongous install option or anything. I am aware of the manual install method, but the music files ARE being installed properly. The problem is is that the f**ker of a game won't play the music for whatever reason.

Perhaps the most frustrating is that i've been abandoned by Interplay tech support.

P.S. Holy shit that was fast Killap :P .

EDIT: Goddamnit, Fallout 2 didn't install the music. Fallout 1 DID but there is still no music. The uninstall screwed up more crap than i thought, hang on.

EDIT 2: Okay, as predicted the sound isn't working still even after re-editing the music path and disabling sound acceleration in Dxdiag. Worse yet, i cannot do a manual install of the game (due to me having Trilogy). The CD-ROM only has set-up :( .

The music files are now in both fallout 1 and 2, but i still cannot get them to play. I messaged Interplay, but as usual i'm getting nowhere with them. Help is appreciated.

Try to set your paths in fallout.cfg and fallout2.cfg like this:
Code:
music_path1=data\sound\music\
music_path2=data\sound\music\
critter_dat=critter.dat
critter_patches=data
master_dat=master.dat
master_patches=data
It's all the game really needs.
