Fallout 1 black screen in XP

Sam Stoat

First time out of the vault
Just installed Fallout 1 for the first time in a few years after playing BOS on PS2 (nostalgia trip :D). Following advice here, I've got the game running in XP, but I still have two problems.

Firstly, at random times, the screen goes black except for the cursor. As I move the mouse around, the screen is redrawn under the cursor, and the game is still playable. The only work around I've found is to open and close Pip-Boy, refreshing the whole screen.

Secondly, the game can take a good 2-3 minutes just to quit back to Windows.

Any solutions?

Here's my spec, if it helps:

  • Athlon AMD 64 3000+
MSI K8N NEO Platinum (nForce 3)
    Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro
    SB Audigy 2 ZS
    500MB RAM

I'm feeling like a nice guy right now, so answer these questions for me:

-What patches do you have installed?

-What have you already tried to fix the problem?

-Have you read the stickies and followed their instructions?

Why are these even really problems?

The black screen is fixable with two mouse clicks, and exiting to windows is slow? SFW!

Come back when you have a real problem.

You forgot the most important question of all:

-Why the HELL were you playing PoS on PS2?!

And Dove is right. It takes too long to exit to Windows? Then hit the restart button.

Problem solved, another satisfied customer. Please come back again to Dove and Ratty's Fallout Help Shoppe.

kind of what I was thinking, also, how could you say that without adding " " emoticon??

I havent tried any of the tricks of the trade to get F1 or F2 working correctly. If you know what your PC actually is, then I bet your smart enough to run it in Win 95 compality mode.
