Fallout 1 - Boneyard - Scurrying Gunrunners are killing CPU

First time out of the vault
Hi all, new member here, old fallout fan. I searched for this problem on the forum, but couldn't find anything pertaining to the gunrunner map.

I recently revived the game with all the new nice patches, and everything works great, however when I turn in the "Kill the Deathclaws"-quest to Gabriel the Gunrunners start moving about and everything slows down to 8x slow-mo.
At first I thought the game just needed more memory, so I alt-tabbed and killed a few apps in XP's activity manager, and when I got back I got a surprise; the nature of the stutter had changed! Instead of running the game without stops but extremely slowly, the game plays in normal speed, for two seconds, followed by a 2-second total freeze (even mouse cursor), and then back again.

Any ideas on how to speed up that map post-Deathclaws? I can't imagine the problem is just because 10+ people are moving at the same time, there are more people than that in certain areas of the Hub and I've never had problems there.

I got a Pentium-4 3GHz Dell Dimension 8300, 2Gb RAM, Nvidia 6800 512Mb RAM, and I got the TeamX 1.2 patch + Hi-Res patch for Fallout 1.
Win-XP Professional SP3.

Well, I had a slowdown issue on my old 1200MHz computer even when gunrunners were standing still. This is the only map in F1 that runs slow. I think the problem lies with those numerous animated toxic goo sprites on the ground. When the gunrunners start moving, then the stuttering comes much more noticeable.

Kanhef: No, that's just it. Even if I leave the entire town and return, the Gunrunners keep walking around, everyone except Gabriel and Zack leave the warehouse and walk randomly around on the island inside the moat, and it slows the game down so much that if I shift-click for my character to run, he takes one sprint-step per second, just about. Either that or the two-second freeze business.

Also, for some reason the savegame-thumbnail images next to my saves get distorted, looking like mincemeat every time I leave the game and re-enter. Could this be connected?
