Fallout 1 crashes during opening movies

I have searched forums for days trying to find the answer. I have seen similar problems mentioned but no solution is offered.

After the manual install of fallout 1 in windows xp the game launches and the intro movie begins to play. when a key is hit to skip the sequence the movie turns green or garbled and the game freezes. the only key that works at this point is ESC which brings me back to windows. I have tried to let the movie play all the way through to see if it goes to the main selection screen but the movie becomes garbled right before the point where the main screen is supposed to come up. I would appreciate any suggestions or guidance towards a solution to this problem. Thank You.

then make the stickies either easier to search or "stand out" more in the forums...or just quit your job as an admin if you don't like helping people.....cos the stickies look like regular posts to noobs...especially people not used to forums.

Oh yes, because that big sign in CAPS saying "READ BEFORE POSTING" is so invisible.
Here's a hint: ignorance of the rules is no excuse for breaking them.

Doing a weeee bit of research yourself before posting OMG HELP ME is simply common courtesy.

Also, JohnnyRobo, since you posted that other topic: have you tried actually disabling hardware acceleration?
