Fallout 1 - Game ends when I don't complete Vault 13 water Q

First time out of the vault
Game version = 1.1 (I tried to install 1.2 and 1.34 but the game won't run with them, I use Vista btw)

Hi I'm a newb. I'm having great fun just running about slaughtering villagers and monsters alike. I don't want the game to end after 146 days (the game forcibly sends me back to the menu after the 'vault 13 is dead' cinematic). Is there anything I can do to stop the game from kicking me to the menu, short of actually completing the quest?

Are there other later quests in the game that also end the game when not completed? :(


I don't know how complicated doing the water chip quest is, maybe if its really easy ill do it anyway, but its so fun to kill the vault 13 denizens...
 
I don't know if there is anything you can do to stop it, but frankly, it's pointless. The quest is what got you into the wastes in the first place, why not try to accomplish it?
And I don't think I'm spoiling anything by saying that not half the fun has begun with the waterchip quest.
 
can you kill the vault 13 people (except the commander, I cant kill him) and still complete the water chip quest?
