Fallout 1 - greyed out weapons??

Hi been playing FO1 after first checking FO3 last year, and I have taken a long time to get towards the end of the main quests. Only weird thing is a while back my weapons greyed out.. I can only seem to use melee and small arms.. all big/energy weapons etc won't work now, seem fine in inv but on main screen any 'good' weapon has a grey background on its picture and can't be used...

any way I can get these back, or if its a glitch, or if they are broken, or if I have ruined my brain using mentats or something? I never use these drugs in combat, I only ever used them for fun when I found and needed free inv space, so maybe I abused them too much and now can't do anything advanced? Seems weird for that to be the case though.

Sorry if this is common or something, did a search but no luck.. its kind of spoiling my game. I just read in an FAQ an alternate way for me to finish the game without these weapons, but I would prefer to keep in line with killing everyone/thing as I have been doing for confronting the Master, rather than a stealth approach!

Can I get my weapons back? Is this a glitch?

Also, what is the total number of party members you can have? I 4x including dogmeat.. any more possible?

Check your character sheet for crippled arms.

There are only 4 regular NPCs including Dogmeat.

ah ty! I went to the brotherhood doctor.. i guess i'll try doctoring myself instead
