Fallout 1 higher resolution patch

Goweigus

Mildly Dipped
So it works, but it made the game quite laggy
i don't think its this lap top
and it not some issue with the regular in game settings?

also it wont run in that optional 16 bit mode

the troubleshooting guide in the read me was no help
and i couldn't find anything anywhere about this

Do you have sfall for fallout 1 installed?
The hi-res patch looks at sfall's 'ddraw.ini' and if the 'Mode' setting in the [Graphics] section equals something other than '0' the colours will be reverted back to 8bit. This is to avoid confliction with sfalls graphic modes.
As for the laggyness, not much I can suggest there apart from lowering the res. Raising the resolution does impact performance to some degree. Usually the more higher spec your system the better results you get.

I had the same issue for the lag. I'm sure it's not the laptop as it can handle much more than this, and the lag is bad even for the normal resolution. Once the high res patch is removed it returns to normal.

In fallout 1 sfall, I'd recommend never setting Mode to anything other than 0 in ddraw.ini when using the high res patch. It doesn't have all of the speed increasing tricks that the real version of sfall has, and could quite possibly be causing your laggyness if you're using mode 4 or 5.

I can't find the ddraw.ini file... it's a GOG version of the game. I can see the .dll, but not the .ini

If you have the windows setting on to hide known file extensions, (the default, annoyingly) you wont see the .ini part. It'll possibly be labeled 'configuration settings' somewhere.

Hang on, did you install sfall yourself? The default graphics mode is 0, so for it to be something else without you knowing where ddraw.ini is, did GoG include it by default?

No, I don't think so, GOG includes the 1.2 TEAMX version as default though.

I unhid all the hide file extensions for all folders, no ddraw.ini. I can see the f1_res.ini though...

Weird, but since if ddraw.ini isn't there then sfall will pick a set of defaults that includes using graphics mode 0, then it shouldn't be causing your lag.

Where'd you get the ddraw.dll from then? ddraw.ini should have been with it.

It was just there, I did an extensive search for it, gave myself all the permissions to ever single folder on windows, and still no ddraw.ini...

Any other thoughts?

Just where? Where exactly is this ddraw.dll of yours? If you really did a search over every folder in windows, then I suspect you've picked up the real ddraw.dll, and not the one related to sfall. :P

In that case you don't have sfall installed at all, so no point in worrying about it.

It was in the fallout folder. Just sitting there.

Obviously something is messed up or else running wouldn't be crawling.

If you right click the dll in explorer and check its properties, what's there? Is it labelled as being sfall, with a version number given? If so, what is it?

I will check once I'm home. Apparently by giving myself access to all my folders, windows 7 decided to not let me access my C drive and now I can't even log in to my machine.... *sigh*

I don't know about any slowness, but i can confirm, that GOG version of Fallout does indeed include a file called ddraw.dll (but not ddraw.ini). The file change date is 18.08.2008 9:22 and its properties tab in explorer shows no other info at all. File size is 90112 bytes. I can extract the file with 7-zip and there are the following files extracted:

.text
.rdata
.data
.rsrc
.reloc

It's not sfall then. Probably something GoG put together themselves to provide better vista compatibility.

Since it doesn't have a configuration file like sfall does, it'll have to be disabled by moving it out of the fallout folder instead. That should clear up some of the slowness with the res patch, but of cause any black screen problems will pop back up again.
