Fallout 1 problem XP

First time out of the vault
Hi everyone, glas to see the Fallout community being this active.

I'm stuck at F1 at the Cathedral. Yes, it's the black screen haunting me, but now it's this bad I can't finish the game, which is quite frustrating.

It's like this, I alread did the military base, I killed off Morpheus earlier in the game, so all that's left is the master.

I can get to the 3rd floor (which most with the black screen bug can't), blast my way through, but that's when the trouble started. As soon as I save my game the screen goes black and I have a hard time getting back to my desktop. What's worse, the save is now corrupt, so I can't load it again. I only have about 2 saves left now from before I entered the elevator to the 3rd floor. I tried going through without saving, but as soon as I killed off everyone, when I get back in the elevator, and try to get back to the first floor black screen again.

Here's what I already tried by reading through the forum.

- Reinstalling the game (1.1)
- Installing on another machine (so tried ATI and NVIDIA)
- Updating to 1.03 (messed up all my savegames)
- Killing off error reporting in XP
- Tried installing DOS version, but that won't work (install simpy doesn't run)
- Disabling video card in seperate XP profile

All to no avail. I don't have Win 98 or SE anywhere, so what else can I try? Is there a way to get those saves back?

Have you tried disabling visual themes or reducing the sound-acceleration in DirectX?

Thank you, my fellow countryman! I doubt it will work though, since I don't think the problem is videocard or sound card related, both my PC and Laptop are very different systems. - I'll give it a shot nevertheless when I get home from work.

I will also try and d/l dosbox, hopefully the saves will cross over in windows, so when I leave the cathedral I can save and play windows version again, since this problem is only on the 3 floor (or rather saving and getting down from the third floor... Damn I'm so close to the end!!

b.t.w I don't think you can ""disable"visual themes. You can set it to "classic XP", which it's already on.

Read the stickies, it's in there. In fact, have you even tried compatibility mode? (again, in the stickies)

Yes I've done all of those thing,
- Turned of sound acc.
- Run in Win95 comp. mode
- Disabled virtual themes

It seems to be more of a bug in the actual part of the game, since my black screen almost sounds somewhat different (I can't use c or esc to get out of it)

All the same problem. I can install the game using dosbox, it will get me through all the menu's but not into the actual game.

I think I am about to give up.

Have you tried replacing the .sav of the Cathedral in your save with a .map? (search the forum for the exact instructions)
I'd wager a guess that it's a corrupt .sav, or, if you're really unlucky, a corrupt .map

Well I didn't fix the problem. But last night I finally managed to get past the cathedral. I bassicaly went in without saving once, killed the master and ran out leaving the droids and mutants trailing. My heart was pounding when I pressed the elevator button, but no black screen this time. As I suspected I was greeted with the end sequence when I left the cathedral. Off to Fallout 2! (Hopefully it will fare betteron the bug side)

Eh, Fallout 2 is a lot worse on the bug side, since it has a lot of gameplay bugs as well. Fallout is almost completely bugless, except for the issues with XP.

If you're in for Fallout 2, be sure to install the official 1.02 patch, the children's patch and killap's patch to get rid of all the bugs.
