Fallout 1: Sound [LEGIT COPY]

thegreatbagel

First time out of the vault
1. Fallout 1, v1.1.

2. Windows XP, 3 GHz, 512MB RAM
DirectX 9 (I think... not sure how to exactly find it)

Anything else you need to know?

3. Manual humongous installation method.

4. Don't ridicule me please!!! Yesterday my dog died after mauling my girlfriend to death, whom I just found out was having an affair with my recently deceased father for two years behind my back!

5. I don't use mods.

Ok, here's the problem. First, after I installed Fallout (legit copy, I bought it from amazon.com and it's Sold Out Software or something... ) and tried to play it, there was no sound during the game (there was sound when I clicked stuff like load game or new game). This same problem happened when I was trying to play Fallout 2 before. The only way I could remedy that problem was to reload the game whenever it happened, and it worked for awhile, and then I'd have to reload it again. It sucked.

So I read about how some people here said to run the game in Windows 95/98 compatabilities. I tried both, and the sound would work, until I did something like open up my inventory. Then the sound just goes away (music persists though). If I reboot the game, the sound works, but goes away whenever I open my inventory.

Anybody out there who can help me??!?! I'd appreciate it and would give you my firstborn, if anyone would first help me get laid so I could produce your compensation.

Thanks!!!

EDIT: I haven't had any other problems (I've only played outside Vault 13 though... ) such as screen flickering or whatever. And I had no problems when I was playing Fallout 2 months ago. It's just this damned sound issue that keeps plaguing my computer.

Try lowering your sound cards hardware acceleration one or two notch.

Start -> Run -> type: dxdiag and hit enter.

Ive had this happen with me before with f2, it didnt even install the music! Here's what you do...

1. first make sure this is the problem by going into your fallout directory then data\sound\music and if theres files in there is a soundcard problem, but if theres no files in there fallow steps 2 and 3
2. go on your cd, and in the data\sound\music folder there will be all the music files... copy them all
3. go in your install directory and go in the folders data\sound\music and your done

hope this helps

I turned the notches down to basic (I went down 2 from the max) and it seemed to work for my initial testing (going down 1 notch worked for a bit, unless I pressed the Esc key).

Something that didn't happen before, however, was, when I pressed Esc after going down one notch and the sound went away, my screen went black, and I had to move my mouse around to clear up the screen. I don't know if that's the reason the sound went away, or if it's because I went down only one notch. That black screen thing didn't happen again when I pressed Esc though, so I dunno what's up.

But thanks, guys, for fixing the sound for me. :D I'll let you know if it craps out again.

EDIT: Hmm, having read some other threads looking into the blackout problem, I guess I'll just press "C" or "P." That's not a big problem at all. The sound issue was what was really bugging me. It's just not Fallout if you can't hear the person getting exploded.

Thanks again!!
